Depends if it is at work, at home or a cell phone. The first guy is right at home. At work, say hello this is Max Smith, how may I help you?

If on a cell phone. This is were people really screw up. It is not polite to answer a call when at lunch, or dinner with other people. Unless you are a Doctor and someones life is in danger, turn off the cell when you go out to dinner. It is SO rude to sit and have a conversation with someone on the phone when you are sitting with other people. Same is true for the car. I once had someone drive me home from work. It was a 20 minute ride and he never stopped talking to someone on the cell phone the whole time. RUDE. And don't talk about intimate details of your life on a cell phone when and where others can hear you. You would be shocked what I have heard people talk about. One man was telling a friend about his sex life with this woman and I overheard him. He was loud and walking about in the office. Later I took him aside and said "I don't think you should tell someone on the phone that X did such as such with you last night. And that she normally has a problem with organism. I don't think the young lady would appreciate your doing that." It is truly appalling that so many people don't have a clue how to behave now that we have cell phones. Think. Just think first.

It depends on the situation.

Cell Phones

Never talk on a cell phone in front of guests, co-workers, employees, employers etc, unless its unavoidable and necessary.

If you are in line at a store, hang up the phone and call back, its rude to talk to someone while being checked out by a clerk.

Keep your conversations private, keep your voice lowered if you are in a public place.

Do not talk on the phone while using the restroom.

Be mindful of other people's cell phone limitations/restrictions. Don't call a friend who has a limited number of minutes, several times on her cell phone when she has a local land line available and is at home. Don't call someone at work on their cell phone unless you have permission.

Be mindful of where you are and where the other person is, don't talk about inappropriate things on a crowded elevator, where you will make people uncomfortable. (ie, don't talk about sex-problems, or unsavory health issues)

Politeness???
Courteousness?? (is that a word?)
Depending on the situation.. heck, I am even nice to prank callers, at least I used to be , before the caller id thing came out, now I know who is calling - and whether or not to even answer- is that proper phone etiquette?
