My friend owes me money but I don't know how to politely remind her. It's just a small sum, but I won't be seeing her for a while so I need to remind her ASAP.

How about, I hate to bother you, but people forget things over time, would it be possible for you to repay me before you leave?
Being straightforward with tact is not impolite - harboring a resentment when you didnt ask is ;)

I find the more direct approach gets action. The only polite words may be in the beginning, with words such as, "I'm sorry to bother you, but I need to have you repay the $20 you borrowed from me two weeks ago."

A polite "getting your foot in the door" to bring up the delinquent obligation gets you halfway there. She will be reminded, and she will either pay you, give you an excuse, or completely ignore your request.

Direct words get results. I am not saying that you should be rude or disrespectful. All you want is your money back. You need to be assertive.

People do forget, but there are just too many who don't care and don't intend on paying you back so don't worry too much about being polite.
Get your money back simply by reminding her that she borrowed it and you'll need it back before she goes or you go; whichever it is.
If she comes up with excuses and can't pay you back; NEVER,NEVER AGAIN..LEARN NOW.
She's the one who borrowed it so she should repay it and you shouldn't be in this position now; trying to figure out how to politely ask for it back.
Just say, hey, I won't be seeing you for a while and I'll be needing the money I let you borrow.

In a pleasant tone, say:

Hey, do you have that 20 bucks you owe me? (obviously, whatever the real sum is)

If you like, you can add:

I could use it now.

Say it pleasantly.

As long as you're pleasant, there's no reason to not be direct.

Sure, you can tell her with a big smile "remember you owe me some money".

The next time, remember.. if you lend money to a friend, you'll probably lose the money and the friend.

Don't we see this happening all the time. The lender feels like the beggar, begging to get their money back. It's so sad.

this is what i do: 'do i owe you any money? just wanna clear any debts between us' and when they ask back, remind them.

this works with my friends because they always ask back!

Just tell her you are low in cash and need some to pay a bill or something and ask if she has what you lent her

NEVER loan money to people if you need it back. Assume your money has just been flushed (for a good cause) and act pleasantly surprised when it comes back. Bottiom line: if you can't afford to GIVE it, don't loan it ot...
