Hi What you want is a high quality 2 channel amplifier. You don't need a receiver as the sound quality is not as good.Another guy has asked the same question and i gave him a few choices based on my knowledge of hi fi sound.I would have to know how much you are prepared to spend because high quality amps cost more than receivers. Also the power rating of your loudspeakers will determine the type of amp you need. Anyway i will list the ones i suggested
to him to see what you think.

The ROTEL RC-06 PRE-AMP. RB-06 POWER-AMP COMBO. (about $1240.000

DENON PMA 2000IVR( about$1200.00)

NAD C372 (about $900.00)

By shopping around you should be able to get these a bit cheaper. The Rotel pre/power units are very good for the money. You are getting a separate preamp and power amp which gives you more flexability if you want to up date in the future.

Here are the specs. for the NAD.

If you are not interested in a surround system because you care more about music than movies, just get a good stereo and add a sub-woofer for when watching movies.

My local "hi-end" stereo store sells a system (cd, amp, 2 speakers) for around $1,400 that is absolutely amazing. Add a sub and you're still under $2,000. Switching CD player for a DVD player won't add much if anything.

But if you're going stereo because of the cost of surround, you're better off building your system one piece at a time (although you need to get the 5 main speaker together since they need to be matched) when you can afford them.
In the long run it will be cheaper than replacing a stereo system later.

Hope that helps.

Just buy a good stereo system, and plug your Video equipment into it. You can you stereo output of the video equipment, so you do not need an A/V reciever.
SInce the audio recordings on Video are worse (comressed), good audio performance on regular audio source is your main consideration.

Just good ole stereo system - reciever or pre/amp with a good pair of speakers and maybe a sub.

I don't know your budget, but these are some companies which historically represent good $ value and a true taste of high-end:
Rega, PrimaLuna (tubes), Creek, Audio Electronic Supply (tubes, division of Cary Audio), SHANLING , Music Hall, Arcam, Rotel, NAD

You will not find them at BestBuy - only at your local hi-end dealer. If you dont have one near by - check out:
