microsoft is only the biggest company in the universe. it would be STUPID to expect the copy and paste function to work in a way that makes sense. The copy and paste function distorts EVERYTHING and its basiclly impossible to get the sheet looking like how you originally had it. so how can i import a spreedsheet into an existing workbook without messing everything up?

How about Data->Import External Data->Import Data and Files of Type Excel Files?

In the Excel file in which you want to paste the data:
click Insert
click Worksheet
right-click on the tab and rename it if you want

open the Workbook and worksheet you want to copy
click the table-select button (to the left of A, and above No. 1)
this selects the whole worksheet
right-click and copy

in cell A1 of the worksheet you created, right-click and paste
click the table-select button to select all data

let the cursor hover over the vertical line next to any of the alpha headers until you see a cross with a horizontal two-headed arrow

double-click
all columns will auto-fit

Not what you want?
