It totally depends on the flight, how full it is, etc. My wife and I have found lots of last minute deals where we travelled very cheaply because the airlines wanted to fill the seats. Every empty seat causes the airline to lose money. However, often times, by waiting you miss the chance to fly. Buying last minute is taking a risk depending on how important the trip is. If you are taking a leisure trip and are flexible in your destination then you can often find a great deal to some wonderful places.

The New Year has nothing to do with it at all. Your friend is misguided on this one. Sorry! What is true is that fares are generally cheaper in February because this is not a major holiday period. So maybe that is what he meant. But the time of purchase is not the issue, the time of flying is what matters.

Generally up, but if it's a flight with low bookings they may lower the rate towards the end. Or just cancel the flight like United.
