If my Mother was white and I do not know who my father is, but I resemble a bi-racial person (and everyone assumes I am black and white) and I have the trait for sickle cell, what race do I tell people I am when they ask? I'm 26 now and this question just keeps getting funnier the older I get. I like to keep folks guessing now...sometimes I say mixed, sometimes I say, "what do you think"...my husband says that I'm confused, but really I'm not...I'm just me!!! However, I'm curious to know what you all would do...for some reason.

There is only one race.. the human race. As for ethinc background, just tell them you're mixed to perfection :)

With the sickle cell gene, there is almost certainly someone of African descent in your family tree, but that's true of everybody (even Ralph Kramden) - no big deal.

Remember, the earliest humans originated in Africa and migrated from there, so we're all their descendants- Nordic blondes, Asians, Germanics, Brazilians etc. Right now Ralph is cursing that 0.25%

From the standpoint of personal identity race is rather meaningless, while the culture you were brought up in & language you speak, those have more of a definite influence.

Sickle cell is a genetic disorder that affects mostly African descendants or people who live in tropical climates. I learned this in a Human Genetics class that I took in college. So i would say that your father is possibly a Black man. Can you ask your mother who your father is? If not, based on the context that you haev given, it would appear that you are bi-racial.

I could be wrong, but I thought the trait for Sickle Cell Anemia was found only in blacks. So, you might be half black, which is mulatto? Either way, you're very confident, it seems, so that's all that matters :)

Sickle Cell belongs to blacks.
DNA test can actually clarify your doubt

I believe that people are just too hung up on what race everyone is. In order to cut people off right from the start is to reply, when asked what race you are, just reply that you are human as in the human race and then turn the tables on them and ask them what they are.

Have a lovely rest of the evening. Bright Blessings.

Does your Mom know what nationality/race your father was?
You can try buying a DNA test - does cost, though.

There are quite a few so you can check them out if this is what you want to do.
Best of Luck!
