Why type of fishing are you doing? Saltwater or Freshwater?
Freshwater:
Bluegill and other pan fish- Use a small bobber with a hook tied 2' below the bobber use a size 8 or 6 hook and use either bread or worms as bait.
Bass-Use a Medium sized bobber with a hook tied about 2 and 1/2' under the bobber use size 3 or 2 hooks use live shiners as bait or you can use a Rubber worm- Slide a worm wheight onto the line and then tie a worm hook to the line then put the rubber worm on the hook and there are also many other jigs to use for bass.
Saltwater-Use a Medium sized bobber with a sized 3 or 4 hook about 3-5' underneth the bobber (Depending on the water depth) and use live shrimp or pinfish as bait, you will catch about every spieces of saltwater (Inshore) fish on shrimp and about the same with the pinfish with the exemtion of a few.
Good Luck, and the best thing to do is always go to a local bait shop and ask the worker there how to fish and what you need in your area he will be happy to pass on the tradition of fishing and remember fishermen like to talk so don't be afraid of asking to many questions.

well some good tips would be time, coverage, and bait.
1. Time
most fish are active at night or early morning. during the day (if the temperature is extremly hot) most of them move out to deeper water to stay cooler.
2. Coverage
look around to see what is around where you are fishing like submergerd trees, any type of weeds or docks are some good ones.
3. Bait
depending on what your fishing for will affect on which ones to pick.
A.) Panfish, this also includes bass (yes bass are related to them for those who dont know)
most panfish go for simple worms or nightcrwalers and the most effective way to catch them would be with a bobber but you can do without this and just fish of the bottom
B.) Catfish
fishing for cats is something to go for if your wanting a knock-down-drag-out fight. best baits would be any meats ie. hot dogs, nightcrawlers or chicken livers seem to work the best. most active at night/early morning.
C.) Saltwater fish
Ii've got no idea so ask around for this.
and just so you know all these tips came off my freshwater fishing, and also please be more descriptive on what your trying to catch.
happy fishing <*))))><

Right Place. To a lesser extent, right time and right bait. Right Place, nevertheless, will always get you fish. How to find out the right place, you have to fish in different spots to find out where the fish are hanging out at. Once you find the spot, fish it every chance you get until the fish leave.

Do yourself a favor and go to a local tackle shop where the employees are friendly. They will tell you what to fish for and what to use. If not, go They will tell you the basics, and an alright spot, but not their honey hole, so then you need to start learning...

My favorite tip is to look around and try to see what kind of insects are living close by. I always try to go native if the lures and powerbait are not working. In the summer it is often grasshoppers, catapillars and crickets. What's in the water? Crayfish, minnows, or frogs?

Know what you are fishing for, and use appropriate bait, line, and gear.
But most of all, be ready to wait....wait....wait...then JUMP when the fish bites!
