Jesus was an Essene and a Gnostic. He spoke of enlightenment. He never once said he was the 'son' of god anymore than we are all children of God.

How can Jesus not believe in Himself? So the answer NO. If there is a messenger for him,
A mediator, one among a thousand,
To show man His uprightness, Job 33:23
For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 1 Timothy 2:5
And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” John 20 :28
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.Philippians 2:5-11

The Jews had a misconception of who the Messiah would be. Had they understood the Old Testament, it clearly pointed to Jesus Christ. Throughout Christ's ministry here on earth He always stated that if you deny him (being Christ) then you also are denying the Father. 1 John 2:22. Most Christians believe that they worship the same God of the Jews...but they don't. If you don't accept Christ...you don't accept the Father. It's all or nothing. The Jews turned their backs, and crucified their own Messiah. But one of these days in the future Israel will be restored. (Romans 11) The God of the universe has has given us His Son. The moment you accept Christ, the Holy Spirit indwells you forever. So...long answer...Christ was right...those who have accepted Jesus as their personal Savior have the Holy Spirit of God indwelling them. Jesus was not an atheist. (a-alpha which negates theos...it literally means "without God.) He is Theos in the flesh.
Not that it matters but I graduated with B.A. in Pastoral Greek studies.

A very interesting way to phrase this question, but by definition, if Jesus believed in a God (whether internal or external) he was not an atheist.

Opps - you made a mis-read.
Jesus did not say God was within us - he said the kingdon was within you (plural). Besides, don't confuse the 'kingdom of God' with God Himself. Different.
Meaning that God's kingdom was in the process of becoming manifest on earth, among all of us. A process that began and is still ongoing.

Well to answer youre question Jesus Christ was brought up Jewish, but could technically be considered Christian, because Christianity is based on his teachings, so he has to be a follower of Christianity in a sense unless he doesnt beleive in his own teachings. By the way, the Christians were right.

a lot of people the following look to imagine Jesus became a delusion. pushing aside the theological view.....it is a historic shown truth that Christ did certainly exist. Wether he became God or the Son of God or the different diety is continuously going to be a topic of communicate. the single elementary truth is that as a instructor.....as a Prophet.....as a guy of peace, his words were disregarded for over 2,000 years !!

he's probably offering a explanation that god is not some Omnipotent all powerful watchman/judge but a potential within man to improve as a species and a society.
An athiest maybe as he did not subscribe to the traditional notion of god (not necessary believing that god dosnt exist) but i think of him more as a philosopher
