She lets others pick her up. The only contact she'll allow with me is to play with the fishing pole. How can I develop a closer relationship?

Try just petting her without picking her up, also have kitty treats to feed her, just a couple each time you are petting her to get her to associate you touching her with good things.
Keep it up for a week or two then try picking her up while feeding her the kitty treats from your hand. How are you trying to pick her up? unless she is a kitten or very small cat don't try to pick them up by the back of the neck , the older or bigger cat becomes too heavy to do that without causing them pain.
Make sure you support all of her feet.A good way to start is to sit on the floor and place her on your lap, feed her a few treats and pet her while talking softly to her. Good Luck.

First of all don't force yourself on her. For example, she obviously doesn't like you picking her up, so lay off attempting it for a while. Don't chase her or force her to be pet by you. Give her more reasons to trust you. Like, go down to her level, click your tongue, move your fingers, try to get her closer. When she does, only gently pet her until she wants away. With time she'll trust you more then you can try picking her up again.

Another thing is she might not like the way you hold her. Cats like to make sure they're secure. Make sure when you're holding her that you have her back paws in your hands, cupped under her bottom. She'll like that, and feel secure. She won't feel like she's going to fall.

I'm guessing you recently got the cat...well, what I would do is slowly ease a closer relationship with it...like the first month just pet it don't try to pick it up...after it gets used to you petting it, try rubbing it's tummy; make sure it's comfortable with you...after it gets used to THAT then try picking it up...you can also try speaking to it softly...I have two cats of my own and they trust me with their lives...the most important thing is trust; in ALL relationships! God Bless!

Just keep playing with her and if others can pick her up then let get one of them to put her on your lap and cuddle and fuss her there (if she'll let you), but just keep trying and don't give up. She'll soon get the message that you mean her no harm and you love then she will love you in return.

Do you have long nails??? You may be inadvertently poking her, I have caught my self doing the same thing.
Try lying next to her and stroking her, getting her used to accepting affection from you. Some cats just take a while to open up.

Give her kitty treats or play ball. She might be fussy or she might be pregnant.
