While some medicines may be safe and remain effective, many will not. You're better off tossing the old medicine.

Medicine is a man-made chemical compound. As is the case with all man-made substances, the tendency is for it to revert to its natural state.
It is not a good idea to take any medicine that is expired; by the time it is 2 years past expiration, it could prove deadly.

Never take anything that has antihistimines in it if it has expired. I have asked my doc about antibiotics that have expired, he said it is ok, but as everyone else has answered, they lose their potency, so you don't really know how effective they are going to be. AS for pain killers or muscle relaxers, the same goes as with antibiotics. The best bet is not to risk it.

Most medications are complex compounds which tend to breakdown eventually to other forms of compounds which may not be safe to ingest, or not be helpful for what you need it for. It is best to take it to your pharmacists to dispose of safely.
