My boyfriend has been getting diarrhea since yesterday morning and its been blood coming out. He's never had that before and obviously it's not normal. What causes this? Is it really serioud, he got it again today. What is there to do about this besides going to the doctor [just for the time being]. Can anything serious happen to him, I'm basically worried about him and if anyone can help it'll be great. thank you so much

Get to the doctor. It could be Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis or something else wrong with his colon. There is never anything OK with blood in the stool. I have UC so trust me, get to the doctor ASAP or he could spend 2 months having 20-25 bowel movements a day, losing 22 pounds in 4 weeks.

You didn't say how much, what color blood , his age, medical history, etc...
If it's just little streaks of red blood on the outside of the stool, it may be nothing to worry about, but he should still get checked.
However, if it is more than that, he needs to go to the ER now.
Seriously, don't take a chance. It could be nothing, but what if it isn't?
I will never forget the first patient that I went to see when I started Home Health nursing. She had a broken ankle, and called to complain about nausea. I got there and found her white as a sheet, with a low blood pressure and high pulse. I knew there she must have been bleeding from somewhere, and called 911.She died the next day from a bleeding ulcer.
I dont want to frighten you, I just want you to know that he needs to be checked out. It probably is not an ulcer if it is bright red blood,it would be darker... but it could be something else that is serious.

He should go to the doctor at once. The blood is most likely from surface blood vessels that have broken (especially if the blood is bright red). If the blood is dark red, it could be a serious condition. The only way to find out for sure is to make that doctor's appointment!

Certain type of infections (e-coli being one of them) can cause bloody stool, and so as all sorts of serious issues in his digestive track. Some bleeding from rectum is also possible.
Any type of unexplained internal bleeding should be treated as an emergency. I'd suggest you take him to the ER and get evaluated.
There isn't anything you can do unless you have a medical knowledge.

Is the blood in the poop? If it is, see a doctor. Plain and simple. If it is bright red and just in the toilet bowl and not attached to the poop, chances are he has a cut of some sort near the opening of the rectum. That's not so serious, but like I said if it is IN the poop, see a doctor.

The blood leads me to believe it is hemorrhoids with diarrhea. He really should see a doctor about the hemorrhoids. In the mean time, he should avoid spicy and acidic foods.

Best Bet is for you to phone hospital,or make an urgent appointment for him to see his GP,or got to GP`s practice and demand to be seen straight away and tell them his circumstances he will be seen straight away if not its the hospital to get checked over, loosing blood from back passage could mean any number of things as what people on here are saying to you,but i don't think any of them are qualified to give you a proper diagnosis.Get him to hospital A.S.A.P.

Where internal bleeding is concerned you should always have it checked out. It's commonly hemmorhoids which isn't life threatening, but an er visit can help rule out the possibility of anything worse.
