Jesus asked the disciples "who do people saw that I am" they give a couple of answers then he asks them "who do you say that I am" Peter replies "you are the Christ, the Son of the Living God" Jesus tells them that on this (Peter's confession) he will build his church. Peter's name is the Greek word for rock. If you don't own a Bible you can look up the story on line. Matthew 16, Mark 8, Luke 9

Jesus told Simon that his name was now Kepha, an Aramaic name which means rock, in Greek Petros, or Peter.
Jesus told Peter that upon him He would build His Church. Matthew 16: 18. In saying this Jesus made Peter the first Pope and leader of the Church.

It was Peter. In Matthew 16, after the disciple Simon professes his belief in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus gives him the name Peter.
Peter is the Greek derivative of the Aramaic name Kepha, which means Rock. The significance of this new name cannot be emphasized enough.
To the ancient Jews, a renaming of this sort meant a very radical change in a person's status. In this case, it meant that Jesus was denoting Simon -- that weak fisherman from Galilee who had tried to push Christ away on account of being too sinful a man -- the earthly base on which Jesus would situate His Church.

It was Peter.
The rock was his belief as to who Jesus was. Who Jesus is -is the rock that the church is built on-not on Peter.

It's Peter. Peter, in Greek is Petros or Petra, which is also the word for rock. It was a play on words, when Christ said "thou are Peter, and upon this rock (peter), I build my church".

It was Peter. Jesus told him upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
