I'm on Adderall for A.D.D. and I'm getting a prescription for Xanax to help me cope with a speech class I'm taking. I'm also going to behavioral therapy to cure my anxiety without drugs. I'm not looking for any remarks from people out there that have the same mindset as Tom Cruise. The Xanax was just prescribed as a "quick fix" until I've finished my behavioral therapy. I've been ducking out of speeches since middle school, which I'm realizing now that I shouldn't have done. It's only made the fear worse since I have no experience in giving a speech. Anyway, does taking Adderall and Xanax together have the affects as taking Xanax alone?

No, the two do not "cross each other out", particularly since you have ADD in addition to anxiety issues. Adderall (technically a stimulant) for an ADHD patient does not have the same effect as adderall would for a non ADHD patient. In other words, the Adderall for you is not an "upper". It is a medication that allows you to focus.

Hopefully, the xanax, on a short term basis, will serve to quell your anxieties for the time being, so that you can make it through the speech class. With your continued behavioral therapy, the xanax should soon become unnecessary.

Best of luck,
~M~

p.s. If you are truly serious about conquering the speech phobia, I really encourage you to explore membership in the Toastmaster's organization. A primary mission of this fine organization is to help folks like you discover that speech-giving can become a STRENGTH for you, rather than a terror-filled, task to be avoided.

Hi, you know you can just call a 24 hour pharmacy any time and ask the pharmacist. Tell him the two drugs and ask if they are contraindicated. Also there is a difference between absolute contraindications (such as mixing these two drugs will put you in the hospital or kill you) and things that you shouldn't mix together because their side effects will be additive (I think that may be the case here). Xanax is a benzodiazepine, which is a class of drugs used for anti-anxiety, as muscle relaxant, and as sedatives. Some of the benzodiazepines are more anti-anxiety (like xanax), some are more sedative (like temazepam), but they all have those three effects to some degree. Soma (Carisoprodol) is also a muscle-relaxer with some sedative properties. So even if they are not absolute contraindications, they may make the side effects much more noticeable (like sedation, tiredness, fatigue, etc). So back to what I said. Call the 24h pharmacy and just ask the pharmacist. Even if that is not your pharmacy, pharmacists are cool people and are willing to help you. They like talking about drugs. PS - personally I would be cautious about mixing the two, because I hate being slightly sedated and not thinking right.

Adderall and Xanax are two different class of drugs and if you have ADHD they can work in conjunction with each other. Many with ADHD suffer from issues of anxiety so Xanax may help reduce your anxiety and Adderall which is an ADHD medication will allow you to focus and curb impulsivity so that you can bring out your personal best in all areas of life. The ADHD meds unlock your potential and the Xanax calms the anxiety you might experience due to having ADHD. Its not uncommon for a doctor to prescribe these two meds together and ADHD meds have proven to be the most effective treatment for ADHD.

If you stay busy and don't do alcohol and use the Xanax but no more than 6 mg of it. Forget about good sleep unless you're on the time release capsule. I try the capsules which are time release but rather have the instant and then a 2 mg Xanax Bar every 2-hours. Chill out and PRAY A LOT!

Ask your doctor about Atenolol for speech anxiety. I have to testify in court periodically and this stuff does wonders. It blocks Adrenalin. Its a beta blocker.

Adderall and Xanax? hmmm
