God's name is Jehovah. To prove it, let's read Psalm 83:18. There it reads: That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the most high over all the Earth." That scripture said that God's name is Jehovah, so you're definitely right!

His personal name in the King James Bible (in English) is Jehovah. In the Jerusalem Bible (in English), it's Yahweh. Other languages translate it different ways.

He only had one name originally....it was the name he gave himself and was known by to his people, the Jews. That name was YHWH (consonants), but we don't know the vowels because they have been lost.

Most people use Jehovah today because it's been around several hundred years and for a long time, most readers of the King James Bible just assumed it was THE name. We know now that it wasn't, but it serves to identify the true God. So does Yahweh which is a little closer to being correct.

When you say "proof", though, you should remember that Yahweh can be proved just as easily as Jehovah. Just look up Psalms 83:18 in the Jerusalem Bible or one of the others that use Yahweh. Why put one above the other?

The name is relatively unknown to modern peoples. The only thing that remains of the name are the consonants YHVH, usually believed to be said as Yahweh, Yahveh, Yahu, and Jehovah.

If you look in an English language Bible, all the times you see "LORD" (yes with the capitals) you are look at what, in the Hebrew version, says the Judaic God's name.

Jehovah is the result of 2 things. Firstly it is using the vowels of the title "Adonai" between the name YHVH. Secondly it is using the latin alphabet instead of the Hebrew one, hence the J. But all in all, history proves that Jehovah is not the correct name.

In my studies and opinion, I will tell you that Yahweh is the closest to being the actual name/pronunciation of YHVH.

Also, if we want to talk historically, the Judaic God's name is El.

I have known there was around a 100. Some of your answers say 99 so I guess they may be right.

Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the only name we need. The rest are ok. But all power in heaven and earth rest in the name of Jesus Christ.

Acts 4:10-12
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

I am glad that you asked the question. At someime in the future I think it would be worth looking into since there is not a clear answer to the question.

The first English translators of יְהֹוָה, believed it had the correct vowel points, and translated it as it was written:
"Iehouah" in 1530 A.D. English.
"Iehovah" in 1611 A.D. English.
"Jehovah" in 1769 A.D. English.

Hebrew Scholars generally favor "Yahweh" as the most likely pronunciation…. Still, there is by no means unanimity among scholars on the subject, some favoring yet other pronunciations, such as "Yahuwa", "Yahuah", or "Yehuah".

God goes by many names, but He is one God. (see reference for a list of the actual names)

If you get technical Jehovah is not pronouncable in the original hebrew language. The Hebrew letters form the word YHWH...

"JEHOVAH: LORD in our English Bibles (all capitals). Yahweh, YHWH is the covenant name of God. Occurs 6823 times in the OT First use Gen. 2:4 (Jehovah Elohim). From the verb "to be", havah, similar to chavah (to live), "The Self-Existent One," "I AM WHO I AM" or 'I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE" as revealed to Moses at the burning bush, Ex.3. The name of God, too sacred to be uttered, abbreviated ( . . . . ) or written "YHWH" without vowel points. The tetragrammaton. Josh., Judges, Sam., and Kings use Jehovah almost exclusively. The love of God is conditioned upon His moral and spiritual attributes. (Dan. 9:14; Ps. 11:7; Lev. 19:2; Hab. 1:12). Note Deut. 6:4, 5 known to Jews as the Sh'ma uses both Jehovah and Elohim to indicate one God with a plurality of persons. "

God has many names which explain His nature:

Jehovah -Our Eternal God
Jehovah Shammah- The Lord is There
Jehovah Rapha - The Lord That Healeth Thee
Jehovah Nissi-The Lord is My Banner
Jehovah Tsidkenu - Lord our Righteousness
Jehovah Jireh -God my Provider
There are many more!

But my favorite is what He told Moses to tell Pharoh:

I Am Who I Am.
Exodus 3

Since you refer to the biblical or hebrew name of God, it's very clearly stated in many many places: YHWH. "jehovah" is the wrong way to pronounce these hebrew letters. you know they didn't use vowels, so it can only be guessed, but it was probably pronounced something like Yah-Veh. But no one knows.

Jews normally use the term "Hashem" or Ha-Shem which means "The Name" is everyday usage.

Forrest Gump says his name is Andy; Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me...Others say it's Howard... Our Father, who art in heaven, Howard be thy name.... leading to Jesus H(oward) Christ, the Son having the Father's name as his middle name. But jokes aside, He is Yahweh, Jehovah, and I Am, Blessed Creator and Ruler of the Universe. Be warned.. God is not mocked. He is slow to anger, but I wouldn't push your luck unless you're on good terms with him.
