Not quite true although Calico cats are overwhelmingly female.

According to The Cat Fancier's Association Complete Cat Book; Persian calico cats have been accepted by CFA for years and calico Persians are always female and give birth to black-and-white or red and white bi-colored sons.

Genetically, two X chromosomes are needed to produce a calico coat, which is why the majority of calico cats are females. If the colors are black/orange upon the coat, then the cat is a calico cat. If the colors are blue/cream instead of the standard black/orange, then the cat is a muted calico.

Hope this helped you.

Now that I know that I have 2 calico cats at home. Cats with 3 colours on their body? Both are female. 1 of them just give birth to 6 kittens but non of them look like their mom. All are in black and white. I will like to ask whether any calico cat can give birth to calico kittens?

So I think that most calico cats are female.

For the most part.....The only way a Calico cat can be male is if it is genetically abnormal and has 3 sex chromosomes (xxy). Cat colors, except white, are carried on the x chromosome, so the only way to be calico is to have 2 x chromosomes. Same for Tortoiseshell cats, which are black and orange with no white at all. Males are very rare, and their value is up to debate, because having the extra sex chromosome usually results in infertility.

Oh, and by the way, brown male tabby cats that have a little bit of orange in the tabby pattern.... NOT calico!

I was always told calico cats can only be female and if you found a male calico-it was worth a lot of money. Dont honestly know if either of these statements are true. But they're so adorable-who cares?

99.99% of all calico cats are female. There are VERY RARE male calicos.

I have also seen female orange cats... and a white at with blue eyes that wasn't deaf.

Sorry... there are no absolutes about the relationship of coloring and a cat's other attributes.

There are exceptions to every rule. Rare, but still possible.
Our neighbors had a male calico.
We had a female orange tabby. Her name was Velveeta.
We had a beautiful white angora with big blue eyes who had perfect hearing. His name was Baby.
Whenever we brought our 'oddities' to the vet he would call an intern in and point out the characteristics and the intern would invariably say, the orange is a male-nope, the white with blue eyes is deaf-nope there too! It's not always true!

Female orange cats are almoast as rare as male calicos. My vet also said the temperment of orange female tabbies are cranky- I will have to agree since I own one.
