I'm an atheist who finds the religion section of answers very interesting. I never give a thumbs down to any thoughtful answer.
I have noted, however, that in many of these threads, the minute you suggest there is another valid philosophy in the world, the thumbs downs come on heavily, and I would assume that is from the supposed christians.
I was recently accosted on the subway by a group of teenagers who were traveling around the city on some evangelical mission. After being asked what my religion was, and my answering that I found Buddhism to be a very helpful outlook, the young people asked me about the subject. But their adult supervisor interceded, and told them they should not be interested. She then asked me if I have read the Bible. I told her I had, many time through, and would probably do so again, as I find it an interesting history of the western world.
I then asked her if she had ever read any books on eastern thought. She told me she never would. She was very clear about this. Her mind could not be exposed to outside thought.
Some of the young people with her asked her why. She advised them that to even ask this question was the beginning of the path to damnation.
I gave her no thumbs down, and I wouldn't do that in this forum.
But I might comment on the foolishness of such rigid thought.

You really think Atheists think a thumbs down is punishing God.....you really are over the top.
A Christians answers are fair game just like an Atheists answers.

I very very rarely give a thumbs down. If I do its because of blatant hatred. To be honest, I get thumbs down from somebody all of the time, even when I give a thoughtful serious answer without saying I am an atheist. I think somebody follows me around doing it. Does it bother me? Heck no! I find it kind of funny.
PS Punishing God????? Thats funny! I don't believe in God.

I'm not atheist, and it's not out of my way to "thumbs down" a mindless, canned Christian answer. I also turn down any obviously lame attempt to be stupid, no matter who typed it, and I expect others to do the same to me as they see fit.
If your answer is thought provoking, it gets a thumbs up. If you sound like a broken record of bible stories repeating the same tired things over and over again, you get a thumbs down.
It's when some jerk-off gets so bent out of shape that they go crying to the Yahoo Nazis and have an answer removed simply because they don't agree with it that gets me ticked off.
Is that good enough for you?

You don't read very deeply before asking questions, do you? Take another look. You'll see many Atheists here who can't even say the simplest things without a thumbs-down being issued to them. I honestly think Christians read as far as, "I'm an Atheist, but..."

The thumbs are there for a reason. If we don't like your answer we can give it a thumbs down.
Christians give almost all my answers a thumbs down.
Think it works both ways
Are you defending god by giving me the thumbs down?

That's ridiculous. "Christians" are just as or more obnoxious than Atheists. I had a friend who was an Atheist and I asked him to say he was a Christian to make the Christians look good and although I was being as good as I could be, I said that I would say I was an Atheist and make them look bad. I think more "Christians" should do that 'cuz your blackening my eye.
