I think the biggest roadblock in understanding nonverbal behavior is the point of view the person trying to decode it is taking.

All behavior has a message, is it avoidance, is it escape, it is an i'm not feeling good message. The person trying to comprehend the nonverbal behavior needs to assess the full situation, making sure to assess what they are doing.

In a situation the observer is the only participant who's (whose?) behavior can be completley controlled.

Blindness, deafness, autism are some of the causes to be nonverbal. The only way to communicate with them is seeing what is causing the behavior and then try to calm them down with a gentle voice or a gentle touch.
