These are counter arguments for the most commonly heard arguments against gay marriage.
"it's a sin." "God condemns gays." "the bible says its wrong.": By far the most common one and in response I have a simple phrase "seperation of church and state". This means that laws cannot be made on the basis of religious doctrine, this includes the bible.
"it's not natural": Second most common. If that's the case then should we outlaw cell phones? Those aren't natural. What about books, computers, cars... those aren't natural. Should they be outlawed too. Plus scientists have actually found members of many different animal species who are homosexual. And there is a lizard species comprized entirely of females. In order for them to reproduce they have, yep, gay sex. Are these lizards "unnatural?"
"it would destroy the sanctity of marriage." 50% of marriages in this country already end in divorce. Not much "sanctity" there is there. Plus if the two love eachother how could it

I'd like to hear some other arguments or counter arguments both for and against, just to hear what people have to say.

Geremiah- the basic definition of homosexual means one sex or being attracted to the same sex. So no it does not require two sexes in order to exist. As for the sex with cell phones, etc. I stated that because people want gay marriage to be outlawed because they view it as unnatural. Cell phones are also unnatural so if you follow that logic then cell phones should be outlawed as well. Whether or not one has sex with a cell phone is ridiculous and completely irrelevant.

Yes we have separation of church and state but until we the people elect officials to office that have different beliefs than Christianity our laws will continue to reflect what the bible says. And it depends on how you look at the bible..... I think there are some passages that have a homosexual undertone to it.... its all about perception.
And with it not being natural..... hhhmmm shouldn't dye my hair, get tattoos, piercings or drink anything but water....its just not natural. Who are we to tell people what natural really is?
Sanctity of marriage..... hmmm that means my husband and I should not be married..... we were not married in a church or by clergy..... we had no prayer or God mentioned at all during our readings..... we wrote our vows. So for people to say sanctity would only apply to people of religious followings and then in turn a lot of heterosexual marriages (like mine) would then be void. It should be called a union..... for all people. You are forming a union with another person.
Yes homosexuals should be parents too, and be able to adopt. They can love and care for a child as well as any straight couple. There are thousands of orphan and foster children who wouldn't care as long as they were loved.
As Americans we have the right of pursuit of happiness, people need to stick their noses back into their own homes before trying to fix everybody else they consider broken!

The 'population implosion' argument: Homosexuals aren't as likely to have babies as normal people, so if we allow homosexuality then our population will stop growing and human civilization will collapse due to having no more people.
Counterargument: First, supporting homosexuality will not make a significantly larger fraction of the population homosexual, and over 90% of people will still be having babies. Second, right now we are already having overpopulation problems, so more babies is the last thing we need.
The 'it's a choice' argument: Homosexuals choose to be homosexual, so they could just choose to be heterosexual and then we would all be able to get along.
Counterargument: It is not actually a choice. It has been shown scientifically (yes, that same science that the neo-nazis are all for when it 'proves' creationism) that much of homosexuality is based on genetics, and that part which is based on environment has already been determined by the time the child is about six or seven years old, which is before they themselves understand the idea of sexuality. So no, it is not a choice.

I'm christian and I don't care. I have my own sins to worry about, don't have the time to worry about someone else's. Not to mention, I'm not the judge, its not my call one way or the other. I have no problem with gays marrying, its not like they'll go straight if they can't. The way the law is, the only ones with a motive for not letting them marry would be insurance companies, who make a lot more insuring them as singles, and the government, which gets a nice little bit of the pie when one partner dies, even with a will. If they're not legally married, they have to pay a pretty hefty inheritance tax to the government.

I would just like to add that there have been more years in the past than Christianity was around for; where non chrisitans have been getting amrried according to the customs of the people. So to single out Gay marriage as something bad that wouldn't exist otherwise is to be myopic in ideology.
What I am afriad that my Christian bretheren fail to see, is that they are pharisaical in their brands of Christianity. And Jesus didn't like the Pharisee's very much at all!

I am not against at all. Being against doesn't help anybody.
People should live as they want. We are always talking about liberty and freedom. We want to be free but we don't let the others who don't think or live like us free.
1st point: They say it is a sin. Killing people is a sin, cheating, lying is a sin. Marriage means that they really love eachother love can not be a sin.
2nd point: It is not natural to whom? To heterosexuals?
3rd point: There are husbands and wives who get divorced, who hit their children. There are husbands who mistreat their wives. I prefer two people really loving eachother than unhappy people following only the norms and getting married just to get married.

People claim if gay marriage were allowed it would hurt heterosexual marriage. The only possible way this might be possible and people might have a case against gay marriage is that they fear that if gay marriage were legalized that either they or their spouse might run off with a member of the same sex.

why on earth would there be a male/female and genital parts to compensate one another? only a guy and a girl can have a baby the natural way. doesent that tell you something? i mean, overall i think its there lifestyle, but its still moraly wrong. and for the 50% failed marriages in this country - its just this country, which means theres something wrong with us. work on it people, everyone gives up too soon.

I think you make excellent points. Anti-gay marriage legislature is rooted solely in religion.
Staff Sergeant -- Did you ever think that homosexuality has always been around, but people are finally able to express who they really are without as much fear of ridicule or discrimination? Is that not a positive aspect of society, that people don't have to hide things like their sexual orientation and can still maintain their place in the workforce, in their families, in the world in general?

It's not natural?
do you have sex with your cell phone?
your books?
your computer?
your car?
Their are species that have only "one" sex, that does not make them homo, you would need 2 sexes for that
