Atheists think that they use pure logic. Still, as the character of Spock said in a star trek movie, "Logic is the beginning of wisdom not the end." Religion can get pretty silly from the stand point of modern logic. But again, the most logical of us have never been able to figure out existence. Why is so much energy used for the sake of such complex order. The pondering of the question can be a bit of a spiritual experience. Like everything, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think truth lies in-between Atheism and Theism.

I toy with the same questions too, is there really a god? I decided there isn't. Let's say that you are god creating the world. Why would you create people that believe in all different forms of you, don't believe in you or worship your alterego? What type of sick individual would cause war, and not provide enough grains and water on earth to let the people live instead of die from starvation? All for some sort of punishment? I don't think so. Therefore no religion is right, there is no afterlife and there is no soul. Religion is something humans have always had to help ease the pain of life, death, love, loss and also helps to answer unknown questions. You have to decide if you would be happier living your life with the truth or with the yummy sugary coating. I, personally, tend to drift in and out. Either is fine, it is a very intimate decision.

Man...I used to think of those things. I would wonder what it would be like if we just died and never existed ever again. I would imagine how depressing that would be. But it was only fiction...I would soon be in heaven with god for an eternity. That made me feel so good. Well, I recently converted to atheism from Christianity...and now it's a reality. Which really sucks. I mean I wish I could live that feeling I used to. Seriously. But I just can't see god as I used to, and I can't believe anymore. I'm at the point of no return.

Nothing wrong with thinking rationally for a change.
The only reason people believe in God is because they are told that God is real from the time they are infants. Over and over and over. They are told God is real so many times, that they take it for granted. And it becomes "absurd" to imagine anything differently.
I know. I used to be a Christian. For 10 years I was an agnostic and would argue with myself that there HAD to be a God. Now that I have accepted the truth of atheism I can't believe how stupid I used to be. Believing in God is no different that believing in a magical pink unicorn that is all powerful and no-one, not even me, can see. It's absurd.
Think about this.... if you were to invent a "fake" God, and wanted to make sure that no-one ever discovered he wasn't real, what would you do?
First, you would make his "real" name unknown and unpronounceable. You would declare that no-one can see him and live. You would announce that your god purposely does not make himself known, so that we can believe in him through free will. And you would say that any evidence contrary to your god is because your god exists on a higher plane of understanding. You must have "faith" that he exists.
Now prove that my god doesn't exist....

I believe that you will be and feel a thousand years from now exaxctly as you felt a thousand years ago.
We are no different to nature than all the other living things here on earth. What happens to the other animals, birds, fisk, insects, trees, weeds, germs, everything, will happen to us.
Think back a few hundred years - - - it wasn't so bad, was it ? Just plain nothing.

I hate to tell you that we really don't spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about the death thing. I know I don't.
There are a lot more things to be concerned about. You won't be able to "think as an atheist" until you can give up your book. And if you only think in terms of life and death, you'll never really understand.

atheists just think that there is nothing up there, no higher power. It's not nothingness, just that all the 'things happen for a reason' and 'gods will' and 'gods plan' are nothing but fairytales. We make our own stories and that there is nothing out there that is dictating something for us.

Being agnostic I do believe that there is nothing after death. Death to me is final. There is no burning in eternal damnation or floating on a cloud of happiness. Its being put in a casket or urn and being done. I do like the idea of reincarnation but I just can't wrap my mind all the way around it to fully believe in it.

The soul is a man made archetype, everything you experience and feel is just brain, brain, brain. No one who parrots a soul even know what they are parroting, there is no such thing as a soul...
