I'm writing a research paper on Global Warming. There are so many avenues to take with this topic. I'm thinking I want to focus more on the political aspect such as the way Congress is planning solutions to this crisis. Does anyone have any opinions or sources that will help me to educate others on this growing problem?

Probably the most important aspect is the fact that Congress IS planning on doing something. That should scare you.

More regulations, controlling every aspect of our lives, and all with negligible effect on the environment.

It's asinine. If Kyoto, with all those idiot countries, can't make a dent, EVEN IF every country in the world were a part of it and followed the guidelines, how in the world is one country going to do anything at all?

There's not even any proof that man has caused it. I'm thinking the sun has more to do with it.

There's no proof that THIS particular climate is the optimal one. There was a Local Climatic Optimum from about 1100-1400, and the world was 1-3 degrees C. warmer. Mankind flourished. The plague retreated back to the Asian steppes. It sparked the Renaissance. Eeeevil global warming sparked one of the greatest Ages of advancement in human history.

Before you focus on the political aspect, check your premises. You've obviously bought into "this growing problem," but I don't see how, because there is no proof out there.

I broke all the rules and wrote a 20 inventions for global cooling. I wrote 260 pages, boggled insanity and came up with one aspect: The actual learning of the future, the key is Germany using 30 percent of electricity from wind or solar power while the USA: 1 percent. A horror comedy, but everything is there that relates to global warming: politics, world peace, chronic regime doctrimes, and of course an open mind for little things that upon a few months of study open the eyes to how stupid we are. Still edited, carefully as all solutions are invented here. The natural is not to understand it at first. But I did build many of the windmills as models and tested their strengths and there is a great future to uncover if one dedicates to this area that is currently understood zero percent. I make a breakthrough. The inventions come and go, broadwayed about, and made clear by the end, but there is a lot of fuss about political madness and Orwell and big brother, which are very serious. But here one moves 70 years into the future, and kind of left in the twilight zone in Bush's greedy mind so to speak.

I think one of the most important things is to educate people so that they're aware of the facts. Without wishing to be disrespectful to some of the answerers on this forum, they shows a clear lack of understanding of the subject. Hardly surprising given the (now discontinued) policies of certain large organisations who set about specifically discrediting the science in order to protect their own interests. This has resulted in a lot of fallacies and distortions which some people seize upon as evidence that global warming is a myth or the result of purely natural cycles.

All the companies that engaged in these practices have now conceded that they were wrong and accept that global warming is a serious threat but the rumours, like all rumours, still persist.

Whilst there is dissent it's hampering efforts to make progress and ultimately any solutions are going to be more costly and more complicated.

We need to accept the scale of the problem and come to terms with the fact that it's not something that can be resolved simply by changing lightbulbs and driving a hybrid vehicle (this helps but it's not the solution).

To resolve the problem by altering our lifestyles would require a cut in greenhouse gas emissions so drastic that we'd be back in the Middle Ages. No-one is going to want this or will accept it. Instead I believe we need to look at radical solutions, ways in which we can sequester the greenhouse gases from our atmosphere. Such programs, if implemented, would enable us to continue living our lives in the manner to which we've become accustomed.

To put it into context, last year our greenhouse gas emissions were almost 9 times beyond the limit that natural cycles are capable of handling, if we are to prevent global warming and all the associated problems of climate change we need to start taking action fast. There are schemes that will remove greenhouse gases but they will take several years to develop and several more years to implement on a large enough scale to have an impact. The longer we delay acting the closer our planet comes to the 'tipping point' - the point at which the damage becomes irreparable. We don't know where this point in time is and the longer we delay the greater the chance that we'll go beyond it.

Regarding your point about Congress. I don't particularly care for politics and it's not something I take much interest in, my desire in respect of global warming is that the politicians keep their noses out and let the scientists get on with the matter in hand free from interference.

overlook the politics and leave that to the politicians. Politics wont substitute no remember if worldwide Warming is genuine or no longer. i'm actually a sprint disturbed you suggested earnings redistribution, regulations on capitalism and fiscal growth, because of the fact thats merely ideal-wing propaganda invented by capacity of politically stimulated idiots devoid of know-how of technology. No marvel in any respect that such claims look gaining floor in a rustic which occurs to be the worlds 2nd greatest polluter. who's greater politically stimulated do you think of, the scientists interpreting the undertaking, or the politicians and business enterprise leaders claiming or no longer this is be a left wing invention ? a number of those thickos think of that merely because of the fact this is snowing exterior, that it is not occurring. worldwide warming is a steady substitute, average will boost in worldwide average temperatures which will grow to be greater obvious over some many years, no longer in one day. If we don't start to handle it now, by capacity of then this is too previous due. like it or no longer, climate substitute is upon us. there's a wealth of knowledge backing it up, the only rivalry so some distance is the reason. hear to what the individuals actually interpreting the phenomenon are asserting.

The best resource for learning about global warming is the IPCC report. They have a Summary for Policymakers which is just 18 pages long and contains lots of nice plots and graphs, and summarizes the scientific evidence very well.

As for the most important aspect, I'd say it's the potential consequences if we don't get global warming under control. You could write a whole report on all the negative consequences global warming could have. The politics is very important, but the consequences are the reason it's important. Good luck with your report.

After you read this topic for awhile you'll notice its brought out every hippie cause from the last 35 years out of retirement, from organic foods to animal rights to vegetarianism. And Congress is as usual doing whatever they can to maximize their relection chances by supporting the ethanol industry and totally ignoring real solutions like solar PV cell research and advances in fission and fusion technology.

It's worth looking into the 11 year solar cycles and the growing level of discourse that is less likely to blame humans.

Congress isn't planning to address the issue, they are planning to appease members of the environmental base.

The earth has weathered far greater climate change than what is being forecast. Evidenced by remains of forests on mountains above the snow line.

Look at the statistics carefully, are they talking about 500 years of data, 100 years or 20 years. In the context of global weather - 20 years is nothing.

Also remember, they can't predict the weather accurately for the weekend, let alone 50 years into the future.

Beware of where the information is coming from - is it from Universities and independant labs seeking government funding for their "studies". Knowing fear sells, especially in the realm of government studies.

"The most important aspect" of Climate Change is the threat of instability. You can read it in the Pentagon's report of projected threats coming in the next 50 years.

http://www.climate.org/topics/climate/pentagon.shtml

Instability means famine, drought and disruption in international monetary systems. In the mildest terms think of the disruption of the "Great Depression". That opened the door for Nazism, the Holocaust and Hiroshima. What will the next one bring?

The Pentagon is making plans. That should worry us all.
