There is no black market for young appendix's. Removing the appendix during abdominal surgery for other reasons, does happen, but that is usually discussed with the child's parents, and some pediatric surgeons don't go along with "old thinking",because of new surgical Laproscopic procedures are now the norm. There is no average age. Take care. SW RNP

There isn't an average age. But most people don't know that the appendix isn't just a waste. It was recently discovered that the appendix isn't just a leftover from evolution. Actually the appendix is part of the lymphatic system. It contributes in collecting excess fluid and returning it to the bloodstream along with the other lymphatic organs. The appeandix also produces/houses lymphocytes which are the main/primary type of cell in the immune system. Without the lymphocytes we have no immune system thus making us completely vulnerable to diseases. Obviously, the appendix is EXTREMELY useful. Look it up.

The appendix is rarely removed unless it is causing problems. As to its purpose, it seems like it's totally useless, but unless it becomes inflamed, and people suffer an acute attack, there is no reason to remove it. Any doctor who does so routinely during an abdominal operation for another purpose, probably does so as a preventive measure. There are no averages that I know of, as appendicitis can strike people of any age. It is not an exclusive ailment of young kids. Also, it is not known why it strikes some people, and not others. For further information, check with your doctor.

The appendix was probably used during a previous evolutionary time. At one point it was used by the body for something, but we evolved to the point that it was no longer needed. It used to be that it would be removed during another abdominal procedure, but that's not the case much anymore. Unless it is causing a problem, it is left alone.
