We just bought a new Mac Notebook. We want to transfer the existing legal copy of Microsoft Word from our old Mac to the new one, but we lost the disks. Is there anyway we can get around having to purchase an entire new program for the new machine?

Thanks for the advice about installing something else but that is not an option. Still hoping someone know exactly what I should do.

I agree with "Linux OS". OpenOffice is a great office workplace with word processors on everything so you don't need serial numbers or worry about losing CD's when you can dowlnload it -- free!!! Plus, it is so much better.!!!b

I think that if you purchaed the retail version of word, as opposed to the OEM version, you should have a legal right to move it to a new computer as long a it is no longer used on an old computer.
I'm not sure about the missing discs though.
I think to know the answer on that you would need to call microsoft and ask them. I have called them in the past with an issue with activation (installed software on a wrong system at work) and they helped me and seemed very flexable, so hopefully they will have the same attitude with you as you clearly care about remaining legal.

I doubt it. When you installed and activated Word on your old PC, Microsoft took the product key and mixed it with information pertinent to the computer on which it was being installed -- and came up with what MS calls the "installation ID." When you attempt to install on a different PC, the numbers will not match. It may or may not install. If it does, it will probably not work or you will be asked to purchase a license.

You could always upgrade to Open Office - its free! You can keep Shoddysoft Word on the old laptop then.

You can try contacting techincal support and see what they say you can do. I think if you still have the serial number you can get new cd's. Otherwise you will have to buy a new set of cd's.
