If a plain, ordinary civilian's life was in peril and so was the commander-in chief's (not political, just any elected c-i-c). And it was up to you save one of them. Who would you attempt to save the American or the politician?

Once again, this is a serious question. Let's try to keep politics out of this. Please no name-calling answers or sacrasism. You could help me win some cash on this one. I've got a bet a work on your answers.

Thank you.

When you sign on,you pledge your allegiance to the US of A.You pledge to obey those who are superior(not SUPERIOR) to you in rank and grade.Although it may be great to suppose you have the right to pick and choose,it is your absolute duty to protect your Commander-in-Chief.Although it may be intellectually the way to go--saving the American(as is the President of the United States)The loss of the Commander-in-Chief would have far more devastating effects on the populace then me.War is hell.No one wins. There are only survivors. As a long time member of our United States Navy,I stand in awe of those who gave all so we can have these forums. No life is without value.Sometimes the decisions are tough.

After 20 years riding submarines and defending this country in Viet Nam, Bay of Pigs, Dominican Republic, Panama and a few other skirmishes along the way in the cold war, I would have to say save the citizen. After all, I put my life on the line for the citizens but I took my orders from the Commander in Chief and carried them out as best I could. The President was elected by the people and therefore should be respected and the citizens must be protected from insurgents. Save the citizen, save the country. Now that I am retired, I have a place to live free and am proud to have served.

If I was still in the military it would be my duty to protect the president.

If I was a civilian, it would still be the president regardless of my political feelings. He is the leader of our country and must be protected at all times. Not to do so would diminish the office of the presidency, thus opening up another can of worms. The bottom line is who is more important to the country?

You've got to admit the CIC has got a lot of authority and control behind him. In other words, this is one important and powerful dude ! We spend a great deal of money to keeping this individual safe from outside and inside threats.

I believe it only makes good sense to say that I would choose the president over a mere mortal !

The president has a whole police force dedicated to throwing themselves in front of bullets for him. It would be nice to be noticed as the man who saved the president's life, but I'd go for the civilian.
