At least 8 weeks. If the swelling has gone done and the initial jewelry is to long you can go back to the place you had it pierced and they will change it to a shorter stud or ring. Changing it to soon will not cause a keloid to form it would most likely cause hypertrophic scarring. As the other answer said make sure you are keeping the new piercing clean to prevent an infection.

Actually, lip piercings heal very quickly. You should have an extended barbell in the piercing right now to allow for swelling, correct? In about a week, you can go back and get that changed. Don't do it yourself. The extended barbell should be kept even after you get new jewelry just in case your lip swells again. You don't want the stud to sink in or anything. Other than swelling, there is no reason to have the extended barbell, so really do get it changed after a week. If you keep it longer, your chances of biting it while eating or it moving a lot go up and can extend healing time.
When you go back, a week after you've been pierced, your piercer should check and make sure it doesn't look infected or swollen still. They may suggest you wait longer. But really, a week is usually standard.
Keep using a salt solution like H2Ocean. I recommend that one because it sprays right out of a bottle. Also, get a new toothbrush and change it again after the first week. Don't get alcohol anywhere near your mouth for anything. Don't clean it with alcohol. Go back in a week and they should be able to change it for you.

How do you feel? If you think your lip isn't thicker you can change the stud. But I think you should ask your piercer to change it (that's cleaner and better for you). At most piercing saloons it's free.

they should have told you when you got it pierced. i suggest 2-3 months. wash it with sea salt soaks. mix 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (found at any food store) with 1 cup boiled water. mix and let cool. apply with medical gauze 3 times a day. good luck! (Changing it to early can make keloids form)
