Dial-up is normally slow and downloading updates is tricky. Been there - done that. Used to get shut off in the middle of an update. I have since gone cable. Huge difference. However, there are a few things you can do to increase and maintain speed:

- set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
- review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
- from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history.
- run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
- periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
It will also help if you download two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot .

maybe that's your problem your on dial-up. It also depends on your computer. Check download.com and search adware and you should get some free software to remove adware if you have it. One of the main signs of adware is getting a lot of pop ups and your homepage changes.

It's Dial-Up, what do you expect (no offense)......Its going to be slow....

But try downloading Ad-Aware SE Personal, its free and really good.

Another good, free, and relatively small Adware/spyware program is Spybot Search and Destroy (AKA Spybot S&D)

There are a number of programs that remove spyware and adware. The best two I've used are adaware and spybot.
I've often used download.com to get my files, it often has useful info and user reviews about products and warns if things come bundled with spyware.
I would start with spybot as it clears most annoying programs.

A download manager may help if you are on dialup as it will allow you to resume the download if you get disconnected.
Free download manager is quite good.
