Ephesians 6:13-18

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Having fought in two wars, I think most soldiers catch on pretty quick to the concept that you don't run backward toward your enemy.

That's why the armor's on the front .... usually.

One reason is 'cuase you can never run away, you can only rest and then carry on.. Life can be a struggle sometimes. Of course the struggle here is against wrong attitudes and ideas. You see them when you turn around and are looking back.
A better comparison is that you are fighting the ideas you put in front of you or that are placed there. If you know the answers they role of your back, you often don't even notice them. The dangerous ones are either presented to you or, if they are in your subconscious, your best defense is to face them. The scriptures are broad on first reading but also very deep and very very deep.

Tactics of that time were based mostly on charges, and were made on battlefields(a big empty field), also complex tactics, and guerrilla warfare were scarce; therefore you would expect that the soldier behind you must be from your army, and since you need to run to get to the enemy, not having the back of the armor and having your legs free gives you more mobility, and is cheaper since you use less material for the armors.

I wonder how many slaves wished they had some protection for their backs against the whippings they endured to make the Kings of Egypt live in their accustomed lifestyle.Could be something symbolic that you could still take a lashing no matter how much armor you put on?HMMM LMAO

Since Paul had much opportunity to see Roman soldiers, God moved him to use this as a symbol as you said.
I would think that it would be that there is NO turning back, NO retreating. To do so leaves one completely vulnerable, defeated, really.

That's because goodness and mercy follows us...and protects us from behind.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever
