I ask cause I don't know if people realize that servers are taxed on their tips based on what they sell. And also have to tip out like bussers and bar based on what they sell not what they make

The new average/standard is 20%, but AT LEAST do 15%. Just keep in mind (like you said) the tax thing AND the fact we only make $3/hour.

I tip a minimum of 15% for decent service, and at least $1 per person (usually 15% is more than this... it's just that if a table of four people sit there and have coffee only for two hours, it would be very rude to leave less than $4, even if that's all the check comes to). For good service, or if I'm a regular at the place, at least 20%.

Having been raised by a waitress, I understand the importance of a proper tip. I tip based on the experience I have with the waitress. IMO, if a waitress is depending on her tip to live, she should be friendly and attentive, not disinterested and unresponsive. The longer I'm sitting around with no drink, the less interested she seems in helping, the less her tip will be. My normal tip is 20% +, and I appreciate the hard work waitresses do, but I'm not tipping for poor service. I once tipped a woman 50 cents because though there was only 1 other table occupied, we sat there for nearly 45 minutes before she took our order, was upset to the point of eye rolling when we did get her to take our order, and we waited another 45 minutes for our food (sandwiches)...she followed me into the bathroom to confront me about the tip and I told her that was what I felt was fair based on the service she provided. She handed me back the money and I said, ok, then you get nothing, and left that restaurant and never returned.

10% if the server doesn't really pay attention, isn't friendly or attentive, or rarely comes back.

15% if the service was average. (Checks back once or twice)

20% if the service is good. (Goes out of their way to ask if I need anything, attentive, refills without being asked)

30%+ if they're really swamped and still being great, if I ask for a lot and seem like I'm being a pain lol, or if they're overall just a nice and helpful person.

When I go out to eat I look at it this way, if the server doesn't do their job to help me out, why should I help them out by paying more for crappy service? I don't think it's fair that I should have to pay their wages when it's not my responsibility but their employers. If someone does a good job, they get a good tip. If they slide by on the minimum, they get a mediocre tip.

I tip 20% because you just multiple the check x 2.
Easy Peasy.

I have occasionally left less, but I always leave something and if they're really snotty, I try to give them the benefit and ask them if they're having a bad day.

Every time I ask that they just stop and take a breath and say, 'Yeah, actually' and I can SO relate.

I have friends who are waitresses and you would NOT believe what they have to deal with.

Yeah, I know that's their JOB, but they're only human and they appreciate when we treat them like that.

I tip 15% - 20%, more if the service is really stellar, and less or nothing if the service really sucks.
