every year whether it be a birthday or a holiday, we get him a gift... and he never uses it! I need some ideas:
his interests are ... tv and golf and food... thats about it

He doesn't like to shop so gift cards are a bad idea.
He plays golf every Sunday so a round of golf from a golf course is also a bad idea.
He has dvr so a recorder is a bad idea, besides Buntee wouldn't be able to afford that.
A painting won't work because mom decides what goes on the walls.
Nix the lips.

Go with the golf, easy idea but him a certificate for a free round at a local golf course, or a gift card from same

Get him one of those "wax lips" things. At least he'll appear to be liking something.
OR, you can get him a DVD recorder so he can record all his TV programs in case he's ever without cable or satellite. He can rewatch all that he has recorded.

Give him a painting, so that if he does not like it, it is still useful for the home, as extra decoration.
Furthermore in painting draw something he loves, like his fav pet/car etc.
