Yes you can, however depending on where you are going you might not be able to take it out of the airport with you. Many people bring fresh fruit with them as part of their meal (instead of eating airplane food), there are no restrictions on that. However some places like Hawaii will not let you arrive with it. Anything you land with will have to be thrown away on arrival. This happens a lot in places when they have a fruit fly or other pest problem.

After a bit of searching ..I came up with this.. American Airlines says that small bags of food that is consumable are allowed in your carry-on (why you would carry unconsumable food is another question). JetBlue had nothing about fruit. But then I got the following...

Food

All food must go through the X-ray machine. Do NOT bring food to the security checkpoint unwrapped. Food must be wrapped or in a container. Unpeeled natural foods like fruit are okay, but half-eaten fruits must be wrapped.

That came from the Transportation Security Administration site and they are part of the US Dept of Homeland Security.. so I would take their say over anything.
I hope this helps and enjoy your trip ;)

I think it was okay before, but now they might have special regulations for food just like for liquid. If you check in your bags you might have a better chance. Call the airport and they will tell you.

Usually you cannot bring fresh fruit to Hawaii though.
