I have mixed feelings about it. I really think Jews need to relax their need for that particular section of land. I don't think they're entitled to it just because their religion says so. If they want a country of their own, I think that's a fine idea, but the cost of selecting that part of the world is proving to be too great.

On the other hand, from what I've read Jews acquired that land honestly -- they bought it. The actual conflict was started by nearby Arabs. Again, this is just what I've read, but if it's true it seems that the conflict is really about anti-Semitism, which sucks.

As a secular Jew,I am both pro-Israeli and pro-Zionist. I dislike the conservative government in Israel, but of course I support Israel's right to exist. I wish it would go back to the left. But my sentiments are a matter of cultural identity; I've no use for the religious nuts (ours) who think it should be a theocracy.

A pro-Zionist or pro-Israeli atheist is an oxymoron.

Since the entire concept of Zionism / Israeli Nationalism is based on a religious belief of the Divine Right of the Jewish people to a national homeland as defined and delineated by God, no atheist would have a leg to stand on in a debate on this issue.

The vast majority of Jews who have immigrated to Israel have done so out of necessity, fleeing the persecution of anti-Semites in the Christian and Islamic world. The number who have immigrated for purely religious convictions are in the minority. Witness the flood of immigrants from post-WW II Europe and, more recently, the 750,000+ ( 55% of whom weren't actually Jewish) from the former Soviet Union.

Compare that to the relative trickle of immigrants from the U.S., U.K., Canada or other First World Countries.

For an atheist to be pro-Zionist or pro-Israeli, I can only imagine it as an option to escape from an oppressive regime somewhere in the world ......

I don't. I'm not a Zionist and I really don't care that much about Middle Eastern politics period. I disagree with the US government funding and supporting terrorists on one side and then claiming to be waging a war on terrorism on the other.

Not me. I am pro-humanity. I don't make a distinction along religious lines. Favoring one over another is dangerous, as should be obvious by looking at history and current events.
