I asked a question about the achievements of science and the achievements of religion. I am an atheist. Most of the answers that I got were that science is only half of the big picture. They told me that to live a full life, you have to have religion and science split up 50-50 to live a full life. However, I do not believe in God and I completely lack superstition. If superstition is half of the big picture, then I am glad I am missing out on half of my life. Many of them claimed that the Bible answers questions that science cannot, like what is the purpose of life. I think the Bible is wrong. I think there is no purpose to life and I think we are all an accident. Now here's my questions.
1) Why are my ideas so scary to religious people?
2) Why do they so fanatically try to change my beliefs?
3) I leave you alone, why can't you leave me alone?

Actually, there's Science, Religion and Philosophy - all of which are mechanisms for understanding reality.

You shouldn't split science and religion 50/50, but rather take 100% of the truth you find from each of these aspects and add them together.

Superstition is not a part of real religion. Real religion is a way of life based on faith, hope and love in the face of the challenges of this life to embrace truth, beauty and goodness. Your concept of god may have nothing to do with the accepted concepts of god, and that is just fine.

If there is no purpose to life, then why would we be the only beings on this planet without one? Those that claim that the Bible answers the question of the purpose of life do so because it did for them. It cannot for everyone though. We are all different and need to find our own path to actualizing our full potential and understanding true reality.

Stating that we are all an accident still implies that something was intended to happen.

1. Your ideas should not be scary to those truly seeking understanding and fellowship. They can scare those who are afraid of change, less than confident in their own beliefs, and who are not ready to contemplate your reasoning behind your beliefs.

2. Often you will find when someone pressures you about believing the way they do, it's just to vindicate their own beliefs. Again, those who are confident in their beliefs do not proactively seek to impose them on others, or gain the approval of others. The truth does not need to be defended, because nothing can stop it from being the truth.

3. Personally, you asked this question, so I'm trying to answer it as best as I can. I hope I'm having the effect I was shooting for. But I don't believe that's what you meant.

Again, the seeking of approval - - it stands to reason that more vindication is gained from the more inconvertible, if that makes sense.

You are the one asking the question. If you wish to be left alone, don't ask and don't tell!
That tongue-in-cheek answer isn't serious, but it gets the point across on that issue I guess.
You aren't scarry to ME, but I know what you mean. Many people don't discuss either politics or religion because they soon learn such arguments can be futile.
People just BELIEVE and there is little you can do to change them!
Likewise, they want to change you because THAT would validate THEIR beliefs.
It also appears that you would like to change their beliefs.

After decades of observation, I believe in BOTH science and "GOD" but I guess you'll have to call me agnostic because I practice NO specific religion, but see value in much that is taught.
Why am I agnostic?
Because I don't think ANYONE has the right answers and I include myself in that all-inclusive group!
I believe life created the physical universe. I do NOT believe the physical universe created LIFE!
The application of intelligence makes us what we are. The physical universe doesn't think so intelligence comes from LIFE.
The athiest says people can be good without believing in god. I say that the goodness displayed by people of NO faith attests to the fact that we were created inherrently good. That fact alone attests to the existence of god.
If that were NOT the case, then all thought would be the result of chemical and electrical responses to external stimulation and as such, NOTHING could be considered either good or bad. Nothing would have any importance. Everything - including life - would be useless and senseless.
May as well just nuke the planet NOW because it doesn't really matter anyway.

- YES, I believe in GOD because I reject what is BAD! - There IS reason and purpose. It may be just one BIG experiment but it is GOOD!

Wow, you say you have a "full life." However, you cannot seem to get over that question.

I believe in science, & feel the Bible is no more than a set of stories used to illustrate a social standard. That need for enforcement & understanding in a techologically underdeveloped world caused the development of organized religions.

Yet, althought I believe it is ultimately hogwash, it does have a purpose.

You sound exceedingly angry. Why? Take a step back & see where you a lacking. Faith is more than religion. Faith in the (hopefully) inherant desency of your fellow man is not a bad thing.

The Bible teaches expressing good will to others. Maybe you should do some volunteering to open your eyes. Get out and experience the world. Good luck.

coming from a pretty non religious person, heres the way i see it:
1. your ideas scare religious people because its so against their faith. try telling a 5 year old kid santa claus is a fake, see what happens. denial and the kid will try and prove he's real. eventually of course, the kid believes you, cause your older and wiser, but in the case of religion, your dealing with mature people who have had time to think up their believes.

2. they try and change your believes because they truly believe your life will be better as a believer in god. and in some cases, this may be true (some people need the structure that religion brings into their life). plus, us unbaptised people apparently will spend the rest of our lifes in the divide between heaven and hell when we die, or something like that.

3. people wont leave you alone because your fighting what they believe. if you were to never mention anything about faith to them, they probably would never bring up theres. but as soon as you put them on the defensive, and make them feel they need to back up their values and religion, prepare for a fight.

thats the view of a 16 year old kid, so excuse me for any mistakes. also ignore the fact that i decided not to capitalize; its not because im an idiot, but instead because i feel that yahoo ask is not quite worthy of my spell check efforts.

My suggestion is to stop dwelling on the beliefs and behaviors of others and focus on your own.

Undoubtedly many of the people you speak of have a limited view of Reality. But that is true of us all, including me and , yes, yourself too.

I am a scientist and although science is silent on questions about meaning and purpose, the awe-inspiring beauty and intelligence inherent in Nature, that science reveals to us, in my view, seems not to support your assumption that "we are all an accident". I am not saying I feel there is a purpose or meaning to the universe. I confess I do not know. I am just saying there is more than sufficient reason to suspect your assumption might , in fact, be incorrect.

#1. Your ideas don't scare me or have any effect on me.
#2. A Christian is only witnessing to you to help you.( I can hear your response, I didn't ask for your help). Because of what a Christian believes he knows he will go to heaven because of his relationship with Christ. He also believes you are going to hell because of your rejection of Christ. He does not like to see anyone go to hell, thus he is offering help to you. The bible says that we should go into all the world and share the gospel. It's kind of like seeing someone drowning and the Christian walks by and throws a lifesaver to the person or would you rather he didn't?
#3 Are there really Christians knocking your door down to witness to you? it seems you are the one raising the subject of God. I can appreciate why as your spiritual life is lacking fellowship with the Lord. Before you go off in a snit get a hold of a New Testament and look at the book of John, it will only cost a few moments of your time, Cheers!

OK well i am a Christian and i may b able to shed some light. I believe to live a full life you live happily, richly and as truthfully as possible. Do as much good as you can and try to undo the corruption of the world or make it a better place for ppl all while listening to God and paying attention to wat he has to say. That is my opinion. Now to answer your Qs.

1) Your ideas are not scary, they unsettle ppl. PPl are either religious or not. Thats just how things are. Wat may make you think your ideas are scary are that you are athiest and athiests to Christians are ripe for conversion.

2) I recently read a book called 23 minutes in Hell by Bill Wiese or something. Now if Hell is anything like what i read then i can see why they would want to help you. Ppl just dont want to see you go to hell. You may not believe in it but wether or not you believe in it or reject it or believe it and reject God you go to Hell. That is a pretty bad place. Read the book to see what i mean. As i said before Athiests are ripe to be converted and saved is all.

3) Religious ppl cant leave you alone because it is their duty to save as many ppl as thy can. if they are pushy and annoying then that is their fault and bad planning. They just want to save you is all.

Now in the above answers i may have sounded like a preacher but that is how i feel. I am not pushing it on you or anything. However i do ask that you find the book mentioned above and read it. it is great and will answer a few Qs that you might have. If you dont then thats fine and hope you find Christ.

Due to the fact that these
Christians use the Protestant Old Testament which is lacking 7 entire books 2 (Tobias, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus/Sirach, Baruch, I Maccabees, and II Maccabees), 3 chapters of Daniel and 6 chapters of Esther may be one of the reasons they ask catholics so many questions.

For the Sola Scriptura this is too bad .
In the 16th c., Luther removed those books from the canon that lent support to orthodox doctrine, relegating them to an appendix. Removed in this way were books that supported such things as:

prayers for the dead (Tobit 12:12; 2 Maccabees 12:39-45),

Purgatory (Wisdom 3:1-7),

intercession of dead saints (2 Maccabees 15:14),

and intercession of angels as intermediaries (Tobit 12:12-15).

The lesson, though, is this: relying on the "Bible alone" is a bad idea; we are not to rely solely on Sacred Scripture to understand Christ's message. While Scripture is "given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16-17), it is not sufficient for reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness. It is the Church that is the "pillar and ground of Truth" (1 Timothy 3:15)! Jesus did not come to write a book; He came to redeem us, and He founded a Sacramental Church through His apostles to show us the way. It is to them, to the Church Fathers, to the Sacred Deposit of Faith, to the living Church that is guided by the Holy Spirit, and to Scripture that we must prayerfully look.

1) The probability of all the differing species, habitats, etc all happening by chance? Try to think about that one.
2) I'm not trying to change your beliefs, opinions and beliefs are like assholes everyone has one.
3) You asked the question moron.

Nondezzer, whatever the hell your name is, the truth is there? Really show me some proof. Part of the problem most atheists have is they corrollate religious or christian as not believing in evolution. Evolution is evident in the world around us, however I'd love to hear your proof on the Big Bang and how that subsequently created all the diverse life-forms we have today. The only thing you have clearly proved is the fact that you have mastered the art of generalization, and frankly that's nothing to be proud of.

1> To be faced with the fact of no god and a life made by accident makes their theories not only null and void, but never existent in the first place.

2> So they will never have to experience the feeling of number 1

3> Religion is like a drug, they are pushers.

Religion is ruining the world as we speak, all around us. I respect your thoughts and balls to post this.
