I am interviewing for a new job. They told me I have to take an alcohol and drug test which is no problem because I do not use drugs so I am not worried. But the thing I am confused about is that they said I have to take an alcohol abuse test as well. What is that? I have never heard of a company doing this. I drink sometimes so I don't want that to cause me to fail the test. How long does alchohol stay in your system so I make sure it does not show up on the test??? Thanks!

As far as I know the only way they can test is to do Liver enzyme test. which could show abuse. Alcohol use can be detected for up to 48 hrs after use. in your urine .But as the time goes on in much smaller amounts. However there is a test being developed currently that will be able to tell from a blood sample if a person is abusing alcohol.
Remember if you are a female that alcohol affects women much more greatly that it does men. From intoxication to liver damage.
best of luck to you.

A blood alcohol test measures the amount of alcohol (ethanol) in your body. Alcohol is quickly absorbed into the blood and can be measured within 40 to 70 minutes after you have consumed any alcoholic drink.Factors that can interfere with your test and the accuracy of the results include:

The use of rubbing alcohol to clean the skin before inserting a needle to draw blood.
Elevated blood ketones, as in diabetic ketoacidosis.
Cough medicines or herbal supplements that contain alcohol, such as kava or ginseng.
Drinking other alcohols, such as isopropyl alcohol or methanolThe blood alcohol test measures only the amount of alcohol in the blood at the time the sample is taken. It does not indicate how long you have been drinking or whether you have an alcohol use problem.

Just don't drink on the morning of your test or drink heavily the night before, you will be fine.

As a rule of thumb, a person will eliminate on average 0.12 - 0.16 BAC per hour. Depending on physical composition and other factors thats about two thirds of a drink an hour give or take.

...and to add to what the others have said be careful not to take any medications during this time frame that change your metabolism and affect alcohol testing. (For example, anti-seizure meds sometimes cause an unusually high test level if you have been drinking 24-48 hours previously.)

I have never heard of that either, but unless you are a chronic heavy drinker or alcoholic, you don't have anything to worry about as far as alcohol showing up in your system.

I guess they figure that if you don't care about your job enough to cool it on the booze for a couple of days than you really don't belong there, and it would be safe to give it 48 hours. they are giving this test more all the time.
