It's a big world. There are other countries besides the U.S. They keep taking the position that Revivalist/fundamentalist "Christians" are the top leadership of Christianity, notwithstanding that almost all Christians are Eastern orthodox,Roman Catholic or mainstream Protestant. Then they ignore the one area - for all their preoccupation with fundies - where the Bible Belt vote really does affect our affairs as a nation - gung-ho anything-is-acceptable support for Israel - which you would think would be a leading concern. They go out about school prayer, etc, and other areas where fundies have consistently failed, then ignore their successes. Right now we have a U.S. sponsored duel war raging in Iraq and Afghanistan because we have a fundie president who thinks Jewish neo-cons are from God and he has but to do their bidding and everything will be great. Shouldn't this excite your interest? Or are you not capable of grasping the reality of anything that takes place outside our borders?

As usual, you bring up fundamentalist support for Israel and all the atheists immediately start to play dumb. What? What is she babbling about? And we can do something about the U.S. - but what can i do about Israel? Gosh - what does fundie support for Isreal have to do with the mideast - or neocons and iraq. Forget it! Why,that woman is just nuts, that's all! Boy,here no evil, see no evil. You understood my point well enough. What hypocrites.

I am also concerned about the Zionist movement, but popular opinion seems to have greater influence on domestic issues than on foreign affairs. I think it makes sense to focus more where I actually have the power to change things. Besides, most of the discussion on this forum revolves around domestic issues.

What makes you think all of us atheists support the war over there in the Middle East? Also what makes you think all of us support Israel? Did you bother to ask all the atheists their opinions on the matter? Way to generalize there Brynn/Jurgen/Grendel.

I "pick on" the fundies because the fundies in the bible belt are right in my own back yard. America needs to clean up it's own act, and make sure these dominionists are not in power. A huge part of the reason the US is involved over there in the Middle East like we are is because of the fundie dominionists. Yes, I get the connection. The US fundies are the major supporters of Zionism.

I am concerned about the behavior of Christians in the country I live in. I could care less what anyone chooses to believe in as long as it does not pollute either my schools or my government. I suspect most Atheists and other non believers feel similarly.

What people believe in Spain or Australia has no particular effect on my life, so I just don't care.

Politically I am more than aware of what is going on in the world. Being British we have always had far more of a world view than the Americans, all kinds of Americans.

But my politics have very little to do with my lack of belief in flying invisible beings.

I can't do anything about Israel right now. I can do something about the United States. We have to deal with our own problems first; only afterwards can we work to effectively make changes elsewhere. We definitely need to do something soon in the U.S. I seem to recall there was some guy who once said something about a "house divided" and how it couldn't survive for long. I think his name was Abe something...

Actually, Fundies concerned about "little" things like gay marriage, prayer in schools, and abortion voted for Bush because he agreed with their narrow minded view of morality.

It is all the same. The little stuff effects the big stuff. I against religion shaping the public sphere.

Lovely straw man you've constructed. Beware of getting him near open flames.

I protest the war every freaking Sunday, rain or shine. Why make such sweeping generalizations? If you don't like the scope of the topic, change it! Or...whine about us not changing it.

Whatev. I heard it directly from sources outside of America that christianity is NOT like it is in America ANYWHERE else in the world, as in they don't rule sh*t outside the U.S., but hey, if you want to be put in line, come on down!

It still blows my mind that Bush doesn't believe in evolution when he looks more like a primate than the average person.
