They've done sound wave analyses on it, and it actually does echo.

When examined by an audio-expert, it was found that the echo was "swallowed" by the original quack, due to the very similar acoustic structure between the quack and the echo. Because of this, it may be difficult to tell where the quack ends and the echo begins. (This was also tested in the British show: Brainiac: Science Abuse)

I saw this on Mythbusters. Adam and Jamie proved that a duck's quack *does* echo, but at such a low frequency that it's inaudible to human ears. They used some sort of sound recording device to prove this, but it's been about 4 years since I've seen it so I don't remember exactly what equipment was used.

Having heard one that was trapped in a chamber, I know that duck calls most certainly DO echo. Of course in their more usual environment they would be on water with no opposing surfaces to reflect sound. Put one in a dustbin, and try it ! Search for `sound science is quackers`, a BBC website explodes the myth .

Maybe because they're not in a canyon at the moment they quack?
