I bet you can!
Teach him to speak by encouraging him to talk for his food, treats, etc. Pet him when he does, say 'Kitty, good boy!' When he goes to the door, ask him to speak then as well. Same drill - 'Kitty, good boy!'
My son taught his [ really dumb ] cat to speak, walk on a leash, and allow us to bathe him.
Our other cat runs and finds his brother cat, like Lassie [dumb kitty gets himself shut in rooms, garages, closets, and dresser drawers.]

I agree with Kimbermai on just about everything she said. You will hear stories about how trainable cats are and, yes, you can train a cat, sometimes and under certain circumstances. However, if it's your pet, you are looking for a friend and you don't want to risk the result (an angry, neurotic cat and a smelly home) if your attempt at training fails and I think it will in this case.
It is the nature of cats to dig when they go to the bathroom and bury when they're done, so they take to a litter box easily. You're not really training it to use it. Unlike dogs, a cats' first inclination is not to try to please you in ways that the cat doesn't understand. If you've never had a cat before, it will take some time to get used to how it does things. Just try to observe your cat and not expect it to be anything other than what it is.
I had a cat that peed in the toilet! But he taught himself to do that. Cats are very individual, just because one cat does it, doesn't mean it's likely yours will and they really resent when you try to force them.
I personally think that clumping-type litter is the best. I wouldn't use anything else. It will make it easier to clean your litter box and will help with the smell. I've heard that mixing it with a crystal-type litter can be good, but I haven't tried it.

Cats are not dogs and are not the easiest to train -- I don't think it's fair to make your cat go out to use the bathroom because you may not be home many of the times that your cat does need to go to the bathroom. You need to get a litter box with clay litter - if you don't like the idea of cleaning the litter box every day or every other day then you should try out an automatic litter box - but your cat will have to get used to it and it could take a few weeks. If you are going to have a pet you should have it's best interest in mind and making a cat cry to you in order to go to the bathroom isn't fair - what about when it has to go in the middle of the night and you don't wake up? You'll be pretty upset when your cat starts peeing on your bed to show you how much she/he now hates you - get a litter box - be nice to your cat...PLEASE!

Instinctually cats mark their territory by scratching in the dirt. This instinct is mimicked by scratching in a litter box. Some people train their cats to go in the toilet, but this only works with some cats.
It is preferred then to allow them access to a litter box filled with approximately 3 inches of litter. Your cat will most likely not want to go out to 'do his business' and will thus make messes on your carpet.

I have trained my cats to meow when they need food but normal cats arent let out when they have to go to the bathroom! You should use a litterbox or if its and indoor and outdoor cat apply a small cat door to your door so that the cat can roam in and out freely!

How about getting a litter box - and keeping the cat inside? And indoor cat's average life spam is about 15 years - while an outdoor cats is TWO!

Although cats are great pets, I don't think you can train them to do that. Use a litter box instead.
