I have a roughly 2" x 3" tattoo right above my ankle bone on the outside of my right ankle. It didn't hurt too bad, it was more annoying.
Any tattoo is going to hurt, it's a needle piercing your skin over and over!! How much depends on your pain tolerance. Just make sure you have a full stomach before you start, and bring some candy with you, in case you need to get your blood sugar up.
Just don't take any painkillers before you go! They thin your blood, so you will bleed more, and your tattoo will look faded.
If you really want a tattoo, then go for it, don't stress over how much it will hurt too much. You don't even know what you can handle right now.
Besides, since your tattoo will be small, it will probably only take about 30 minutes, probably less. It's half an hour of being uncomfortable to have a piece of artwork on you for your whole life.

I have a small heart entangled with a small vine on my right ankle. I had it placed 2 inches above my ankle bone. I get tons of compliments on it.I also have a tatoo on my right shoulder. My ankle tatoo was totally bearable..a little uncomfortable but because it is quite small, it was finished in 5 minutes. ..definitely worth it! My shoulder tatoo hurt much, much more. I would recommend getting a tatoo on the ankle over a shoulder anyday!
It feels like exactly what it is, a needle continually poking you. If you get something small and on the ankle, it is not bad at all, and will be over before you know it!
Good luck!

WOW... I can't believe you want a tatt but you're scared of needles. = P
Anyhow, I have a few tatts & I can most definitely tell you that through my experience, wherever the sun doesn't shine (skin wise)... it's going to hurt. For instance, I have a tatt on my arm which didn't hurt as bad as the one on my mid-lower back. OUCH!!! It also depends on your level of pain tolerance. Since your ankle is an area where for the most part, the sun doesn't shine, there will be pain... also take in consideration the bone that protrudes & the thin skin. I would say the easiest area to tatt on your ankle will be the inside of it.

If you get it on the ankle it's going to hurt anyway but if u get it above the bony part where theres a bit more flesh it'll be less painful than directly over the bone.

Alright, first off if you want a tattoo it should be whereever you want. Do not choose a placce and tattoo depending on the pain. Its a tattoo there is always going to be pain.. so if you like it on your ankle do it hold someones hand and get ready to have an expirence of a lifetime. =p

Tattoos do not hurt like a shot does. Its sort of like bees stinging... and then it sort of numbs up (at least personally). Anything on your ankle, no matter where or which side, is going to hurt because of the bone. The more fat, the less it hurts.

I have one on my ankle, a dolphin jumping through a peace sign. The worst part was the lower part, closer to the bone. When they do the outline, that is the worst part. After that you get kinda numb. Then when they start the shading it's not too bad. Hope it helps! :)

Here's just a thought, its better to have it done on the inside (the part where your foot curves in up to your big toe) of the leg. If you have mid/mid-high socks, then that is where I would place it.
