Halo 2 requires DirectX 10 which is a feature only available on Microsoft Vista. Microsoft is releasing it this way to drive customers to upgrade to their new operating system rather than releasing DirectX 10 for XP or writing their software to support DirectX 9 or other older versions.

What you may want to keep an eye out for is an open source project called Alky (now managed by the FallingLeaf System project). They are working to bring DirectX 10 compatibility to the Windows XP system.

I know some people played Halo 2 Vista on WinXP, with a special non-legal patch.
That's all I know.

Unfortunately Microsoft owns that title and is made for DirectX 10 only. The only OS that currently supports DX10 is Vista - it is a gimmick from MS really - for you to buy their new OS.
