I have a few book ideas and I want some ideas on what you would let your child read... please let me know ages and any criticisms you may have.
#1 - is a story about a pair of young mice who venture out into the world on a mission to save their mouse town, which is under attack from an invading group of Rats.
#2- is a story about a group of children who come together to rescue their school from a wizard they accidentally let loose from a book where he was trapped by another world. When he gets out he causes havoc on the town until they are able to get him back to the book, but little do they know he is taking a prisoner back with him.
#3- a group of kids in Elementary school have numerous adventures in their town - they solve mysteries and have adventures.
#4- a teenage babysitter comes to babysit a neighbors three little girls and begins to notice strange and magical things start to happen. She discovers that they aren't as normal as they seem.
please let me know.
thanks
VM

Number 1- is not along the lines of Rats of Nihm, although I did realize that it may sound like it - i left out the unique parts because I feel they are really good lessons I want to put into my books so I wanted to give a general version of the story..it does sound like Rats of Nihm the way I wrote it though huh! anyways Thanks for your input that shows me that parents out there care about reading.
Thanks!!

Every book sounds fun and interesting. I would go with #1 if you are going to be aiming towards preschool-grade 2. I would do #2 for grades 4-9. And #3 for grades 4-6. and #4 for grades 4-9. But it is hard to say because it depends on the vocabulary, length, pictures or no pictures, and how in depth the story goes. If you really want to you can make any story work for any age. Personally I like #2 and I am in my 20's.

I like all of the ideas and I would let my child read any of them. However, number three seems a little overplayed I mean there's nancy drew, the hardy boys, etc... I really like the ideas for number 2 and 4 the best and I think you could make a best seller out of either one. Good luck and I would say the target ages for them would be between 8 and 12.

Um...#1 is already copyrighted. Sorry. Not your original idea. The "Rats of Nihm" (sp) is already a book AND a movie.

Honestly though, if my child READS then that's what matters.

Your audience is not going to be the parents of these children. Harry Potter gets kids to read and is banned by many parents and libraries. Does that make it a bad book? OF course not!

Your goal is to make a book interesting, not to get parents to let their kids read their books. Kids are going to read what they want. You can't get everyone to love your book. Instead you should write because THIS story needs to be told.

Three and four sound like something that my children would enjoy. My children are 6 & 7, but they read on a third/fourth grade level. I would love to read the chapters and let you know what I think. If I like it, I can let my children read it and you can get their perspective. They would love it! Reading is their favorite thing to do. In fact, at night when they should be sleeping I catch them reading. I don't know if they are the right age range, but they read Nancy Drew, Goosebumps, etc. How do I give you my info. without giving it to everyone?

I like #3 and #4.. .

#3 sounds like you could turn that into a big series and
#4 seems really interesting! i would probably read them all!!

good luck and let us know when you get them published..or maybe a few spoilers on your stories when you start working on them? I am interested already!!

To be honest, I (and other teacher friends and parents I know) avoid books that have anything to do with magic, witchcraft (althought you didn't say that directly, some of your descriptions were vague enough that it could be in this category), ghosts, and the like.

#1 My kids wouldn't want to read it because they are not into that kind of fantasy - but lots of other kids are.
#2 No, wouldn't let them read about a wizard.
#3 We've had lots of these kinds of books and my kids love 'em. Even if the theme is used a lot, it's different in each series because the kids are different.
#4 Nope, wouldn't let them read it.

I will let him read all of them. He is 6 and already reading so I would get him to read the easier books to me and the harder books I would read. Books are wonderful if they enjoy reading and being read too. Imagination, storytelling is wonderful and kids have plenty of imagination.
