WHY baptise if you're not a religious person?

Your son should make the decision when he's older anyway.

Ee-gads people! Is there not compassion for a woman who may be expressing some repentance?!

Okay, so you're a single-mother. Am I assuming too much to think that the reason you have been or think you'll be "frowned upon" is because of a past sin of premarital sex? And that you're a single parent *not* because your husband died?

So you don't consider yourself a religious person now. Does your desire to have your son baptized indicate that in some way you are sorry for your *past* sin of premarital sex? If you are living with or continue to have sex with this man who took part in getting you pregnant, are you willing to stop having sex, move out or get married in accordance with God's Law? In other words do you *desire* to turn away from this sin from here on out, (this does *not* mean you have to deny your son in any way)? If this is the case, Alleluia! The church should be happy to welcome both your son & you into their family. Is this what you want?

In this case I would suggest seeking out an LCMS Lutheran congregation & pastor who will instruct you in God's Word (Law & Gospel from the Bible) & Sacrament (Baptism & Communion). As part of this, he will teach you about Baptism for your son, (i.e. what it is, why the Church baptizes, etc. etc.). Per their theology, LCMS congregations & their pastors should neither minimize your past sin & the consequences of it, *nor* reject you or your desire to turn away from your sin & have your son baptized. They shouldn't expect you to be holy before you are justified (made holy) in Christ by Baptism and/or (if you are baptized) a healthy diet of God's Word. If you yourself are already baptized you are free to return to the church in repentance & hear His Word for you regularly. Does this make sense? I think this is a much better alternative than finding a liberal church who will just baptize your son without instructing you about the parent's ongoing spiritual responsibility to their child or the congregation's ongoing responsibility to you & your child.

Prayers that the Holy Spirit will lead you unto repentance, truth, comfort & nurturing love in Christ's name. Amen.

U don't tell us what Ur motive here is, but if U think it will get them into Heaven should they die young, U are wrong! Baptism by some Yahoo Padre or anyone else is NOT A MAGIC BULLET!!! It is ONLY an Outward Sign by a Believer Acknowledging their Alignment in the Belief that their Savior Jesus Christ, Died, was Buried & then Overcame the Grip of Sin, Death & Hell to resurrect into Heaven with the Father. Concerning being Accountable for Ur Sins, SIN IS NOT THE ISSUE!!! We are sent to Eternal Damnation in Hell by NOT ACCEPTING CHRIST PERIOD!!! So how can a small Child or ANYONE who is not or cannot reach the "Age of Accountability" be Condemned for not Accepting Christ??? Answer, They Can't!!! So our Loving God, when they die before being able to Choose to Accept Christ, takes them to be with Him AUTOMATICALLY!!! If I were U, I would worry more about what God thinks about how U should raise the Child than what Mankind Wrongly Judges U on!!! John

Baptism is an outward sign of an inward grace. If your son is a Christian and wants to tell the world that he's not ashamed of Jesus Christ most any church would be willing perform that ritual.

If your son is young and you want to dedicate him to the Lord, you might consider a Christian Dedication rather than a baptism.

Unitarians! They don't even say Jesus in their services. They may ask if you want your lesbian partner to participate with you. I am no Christian, but this kind of freaks me out. I expect to be condemned to hell when I step into a church. They are about unity and love and unChristian stuff like that. LOL

If you are not religious, then why is it important to baptize your son into faith when you yourself overlook the importance of faith?
This is not a reprimand, it's really just a logical question.

Check out a non-denominational church and both of you get baptized. (THAT would be cool.)

It dosen't hurt anything to Baptise a child.

But, it would be better if you DEDICATED that child to the Lord Jesus Christ, Come in the Flesh and Risen from the Dead (GOD).

At the same time.

Ditto...........hope this helps!

Hmm here is an idea.
Why dont you ask your son if he wants to get babtised first.
Your not a religious person yet you want to get your kid baptized...is there something I am missing?

Sorry but I think anyone should be allowed to choose whether they get baptised or not.

Getting baptized when not believing the gospel is just getting wet.

And regardless, there is really only one faith and one baptism, and this baptism is of the Spirit. When one truly believes the gospel and understands it, they undergo this baptism. Following it up with water is what one normally does as a result of the baptism of the Spirit; the outward sign of the inward faith.

So unless your son believes the gospel, you are just getting him wet.
