I am a complusive clean freak. My advice would be to do ONE room at a time. Don't look at the whole job that needs to be done. Work on one room at a time and clean-it-OUT!! Get rid of things that you definitely don't need. You might WANT them, but do you actually NEED them. Once that room is done, move on to the next. Don't start putting things back into the rooms that have been cleaned. If you work right along on schedule, you should have all the rooms cleaned in under a month. Yes, I said, month because if you are a BIG pack rat, it will take a while to get through each room. Clean and dust and scrub as you go and in no time you will have a squeaky, clean house. And then keep it that way. When you go shopping, if you see something, you have to have an immediate thought of what you can use it for before you ever consider buying it. And I mean immediate. If you have to think about it....you don't need it. Good luck and start that cleaning!!!

I am sure you feel overwhelmed by all the stuff. First thing you can do is pick a room. Move everything out of that room, when you move back in, only put the necessary things back in. Then go to the second room and so on. Before you know it you will have only one room left. Sort that room as suggested with boxes and labels as necessary and not necessary. Take all the non essential things to good will or have the sale, but don't use your new found money to buy more things, go on vacation. You will deserve it for all your hard work.

I am a pack rat, too. There are a lot of sites that deal with pack-ratism. I think the easiest way to deal with our problem is to take baby steps and slowly start to get rid of things.
It seems that hoarding and living among clutter can be linked to obsessive compulsive disorder.
It's a hard habit to break if you've been hoarding for years, and just looking around at the mess can make you feel overwhelmed and helpless.

Well look at the clothes you've out grown or are out of style for you, look at the books you've read and look at toys that you had since you were little, if you still have them then grab trash bags, put all the junk in and pull it to the curb of the street, you will have A LOT more space for you're new stuff

I would agree with puppycutie2007 and Anna! You should label a few boxes of stuff that you want to keep and stuff that you want to throw out! I do that all the time. Some of the stuff I have is either broken or I can't use it anymore. So have fun and remember you really don't need all that stuff anyway do you?

First thing is to have a huge yard sale and get rid of what you don't need and then slowly put everything in order and stop buying things that are not necessary

Anything that you have not touched or used in the last 6 months donate to goodwill. Don't even open it! Just carry it to Goodwill!
