I want shoes that are light enough but give really good support for preventing shin splints and are comfortable.

Everyone has different shapes of feet. I love Saucony, but some people can't wear them comfortably. A lot of people like New Balance, but I can't find a pair that fits right. You need to find a very comfortable shoe (for you) and don't put on a brand new pair the day of the race. Go to a good running shop and tell them what you are looking for. Be prepared to pay a little extra, but it is much less expensive than an injury.

Asics is the most popular brand of shoes worn by marathon runners. Nike is firmly in second, although Brooks, Mizuno, and Saucony are close behind all competing to be third. All five shoe companies make fine shoes, and you should have no problems completing a marathon with shoes from these companies.

The exact shoes that you should wear depends on the individual because we all have different feet that work in different ways. The best way to figure out which one fits you the best is to go to a specialty running shoe store. There, you can have them analyze the way you run so that they can make shoe recommendations. Then, you can try them on and go for a run on a treadmill or parking lot. Only your feet know which shoes are best for you.

As for your shin splints, I don't know of a single shoe that can eliminate them. The primary reason why people get shin splints is because they do not stretch before and after their runs. Some very helpful stretches are described (with pictures) in the link below. I used to get terrible shin splints when I first started running, but I stopped getting them after I started doing those stretches, especially the first three. Other causes can include running on hard surfaces, running with a bad form (crashing down with every step) or wearing worn out shoes.

Spikes are light shoes that are used on a track. Some good brands are Nike, Puma, and Sacouny.
