My brother received checks ranging from $20-250. The $250 was from family though. I say anywhere from $20-50 is good.

Whatever amount you feel is appropriate.
Actually, I think a great gift is a WalMart gift card.
The reason is that it is reloadable, even from a distance by someone who doesn't have the card, if you have the stub or receipt, and can't be used for alcohol or in a bar.
This is what I would do for my kids instead of a credit card.
It is a great way to "send money" and still kind of limit what they can do with it, and not let them run up a horrid credit bill.
You give the card, and then when you want to add money to it for the person, you bring your receipt from the purchase into the nearest WalMart and add money to it. I wouldn't be suprised if you could even load it at WalMart.com.
Maybe you could give the stub and reload instructions to the mom.
It doesn't have to be WalMart, I only say WalMart because I do know that those are reloadable as I said. Any grocery store or department store he'd have access to would be good as well.
Anyway, as to the amount, no one can tell you what's appropriate. For some people 50 bucks is nothing, and for others it's a big chunk of the budget. Only you can decide what you feel is enough.

For friends of the family, a typical gift would be a congratulations card with $20-30. Most Family members give in the $25-50 range(with the exception of parents and grandparents, where the range can be anywhere from $100-1000.)

The standard is 50 dollars...if you are a very close friend of the family...I would say 100 is best. Think of it this way...how many times does your best friend's son graduate?

Instead of cash why not give a few gift cards to various grocery stores? Use $5 for each one, but don't give over 4 cards.
