Hi there guys!

I am 5'9" and between 240 and 245 lbs. I am definitely overweight, and it is noticeable, but I am not huge. Also, I have a good amount of muscle under that fat (I have been doing strength training at my college).

I know I should be doing running as well, but that is out of the question for me. Whenever I run, or even walk fast, my shins tense up and I feel bad pain in what I think is the anterior tibialis and well as the soleus (the shin and sides of the shin) in both my legs. I also have major burning in my quads, which oddly enough have had a decent amount of muscle added to them recently.

I have already started cutting back on junk food, and if I am losing weight at all it is at a snail's pace. So what can I do to lose weight that does not involve running?

One more thing, is it just shin splints I have or something else?

Thanks!

You're married to or dating an illegal. I hope they catch her and send her back. Then you can run all the way to Argentina to see her and that will be the best weight loss program you could ever have.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise (jogging, swimming, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

I would recommend checking out this guy’s site and his book. I myself have found it very helpful and have been successful using the steps laid out for a few months. I have never felt better and have lost the weight I wanted. I have friends that just started and they state it is easy and can not believe it. www.juststopeatingsomuch.com It will not only help you now, but for the rest of your life. Very safe and very smart!

you are going to have to find a way to get your cardio in. As long as it is not a health problem you should jog until you can't anymore. Then use the bike and ellipital machine to give your knees a rest. I would check with the doctor about that leg pain because you should be able to walk fast and jog.

See a doc re: your legs. It may be something that can be remedied.

As for other activities than running or walking, try bicycling or swimming. Both of those are more leg-friendly (as far as impact is concerned).

Take care of you...that body has to last you a lifetime!
