Maybe butterflies or doves but not butterflies and doves. Might be a little much. I like the butterflies, because then they go free. The doves are usually trained, though and come back and then they're just sad little trained doves that live in cages until the next wedding they're rented for. I don't know if its cruel or not. I've never seen how they treat them. It just seems sad to me, that's all, but who knows, maybe they get a kick out of it.

Also, the dove thing could get messy with them flying over everyone if you know what I mean.

It sounds pretty, yes, but either can be a real pain to make happen properly.

The one wedding I went to that had the butterfly release...let's just say by the time the boxes were opened nearly half of those butterflies were never going to fly anywhere again.

Between the comfort and safety of the creatures involved, environmental concerns, and the serious potential of wedding guests being crapped on by doves, it's not something I would really recommend.

Not doves... too sad for them. Have you seen them stuff a ton of birds in a small basket... that way they are sure to fly out!

Butterflies would be nice. Funny you ask, getting married on Maui, and we had this option. We declined... not because of money, because I just didn't like the idea of doves.

No. I think it is cruel.

With butterflies most of them are dead when you open up the boxes. The ones who are alive are usually released in a foreign climate and die. They usually don't show up well in pics anyway.

Doves are usually farm-raised and fed by the vendor so when you release them they don't know how to fend for themselves and also either starve to death or get eaten by preying birds like a hawk. There are trained ones but I still refuse to support the practice in general. I have also seen them poop on guests when they are flying out.

Not the sentiment I want for my wedding.

NO! It's not fair the the butterflies and birds. As an animal lover it would bother me and give a negative impression on the overall wedding.

it seems like everyone does doves,

I like to be different so I would opt for butterflies. How beautiful that would be.

Yes, I would love this. The trained doves can be retrieved so they don't get lost in the wild, and are kept by their trainer.

Butterflies. Bright blues and yellow ones. I've never seen it done but I'm sure it would be so beautiful

butterflies i think, they can't poop on you, birds can. plus they would be beautiful, little butterflies. but doves would be cute too i guess, they're just big and bulky and they poop.
