i completely agree with you and thats how i think.
but i think people are more comfortable saying what they believe is "the truth", religion whether its true or not can be very comforting to some people. because most religion spells out why we're here, how we got here, and what to do etc. If you adopt that and become comfortable with it, when someone else comes along with a new set of beliefs that might make sense that would make them uncomfortable. and if you've spent you're whole life believing its truth and devoted your life to this belief then i can understand how it would make people really uncomfortable. people are uncomfortable with why we're here how we got here and what our purpose is and most religions answer those questions so it reassures people, and they don't want to even partly let go of that by accepting that it might be only part true or not true at all or theres another way to think of it. thats a big part of what religion appeals to i think.

What is truth? The question, along with How do we know?, is, to my mind, still the primary philosophcial question facing mankind.
Kierkegaard divided truth into objective and subjective. You have taken the position that truth, at least when it comes to religion, is forever belief and therefore subjective.
According to your directive, one should only use the word belief in relation to religion; since your definition of belief is simply stated "a personal version of 'the truth'. Your logic implies that there can be no subjective truth.
Across the board, religion or science or philosophy or shooting craps in a back alley, people generally assign the word truth to what they believe; if for no other reason than to justify their reasons for doing things and maintain personal and/or group identity.
Some of what some people believe is true. Some of what other people believe is not true. As simple as that. As most understand truth, none of us has it all.
I do not have my own version of the truth because I do not see truth as something which can be owned or established by individuals or groups. My beliefs have proved workable for me. On that basis I pass them along as true and my best light at the time.
Actually, it is worse than you think. Consider. I do not have my own truth, nor do I have a version of the truth. The fact is I am the truth. Truth is not a certain order of facts, scientific outcomes or religious ideas. Truth is a man. Always was and always will be.

Words are never the truth, just an attempt by people to talk about their experience or beliefs. What you feel in your heart is the truth, the earth is the truth, love is truth, words are never true, just an interpretation. Singing however is truth, the tones are truth, the words may or may not have any truth in them at all. I find it interesting that a beautiful song may have nonsense words to it.

The bible is truth...and because of my experiences I believe it is the whole truth, perfect and complete. That is my belief but not necessarily your belief. Many peoples belief systems are based on their own opinion. There is no such thing as a person's own truth...it is either truth or a lie. If there is a situaton...there are 3 sides to a story..your side, my side, and the truth. There is only one truth. If it is your truth, then it is a lie u want to believe in, and u will rationalize it any way you can.
God bless you,
Daniel

Believing something is "going" to happen is still just a belief- as that event must happen for it to become a truth. True and False are tricky terms - be careful with them. In Logic, you learn that true and false are predicate qualifiers - or assignments of validity, and ultimately any truth simply leads you to the next set of arguments, once something has been established as true, i.e. move on the the next premise now that the previous is established as true. So anyone who believes "their" (is it really theirs to possess?) religion is truth, really has given themselves permission to advance to the next level of arguments in life - they must advance and continue to seek a comprehensive truth.
Or more simply, people believe what they believe is true because it validates their existence. It puts them on the winning team so to speak, in their mind and creates psychological comfort. And yes, I believe in God, in case your wondering. Good Luck!

Everyone has their own truth. It varies from person to person. We all believe our truth, whether it be religion, faith, love or life. Because everyone has their own truth... it is true for them. They can never be wrong about their own truth just like their opinion or view can never be wrong. They are entitled to it just as we are to ours. That's our freedom. It's our right. Isn't it wonderful???

What is truth? You said "everyone has their own truth" so......
Jesus tells us He is the Way the Truth and the Life, --and as I have believed in this my life has changed and I can see this Truth in my life. We all follow our own experience and decide our "truths", I know that He is the Truth, but you said it "everyone has their own truth" thats the beauty of free will.

Because their "holy" book says that it is the truth, and they magically "know in ther hearts" what the "true meaning" of their book is.
The other 30,000 versions of their own religion out there are just interpeting it wrong.
Boggles the mind, doesn't it?
