The building is 118ft on each side and the ceiling is about 30ft high...I wanted the canopy to gather somewhat in the middle and then flow out. If you have any suggests as to what to put in the middle of the ceiling I would greatly appreciate it as well. I need to know what type of material to use and how much. Also if you have any pictures I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Excellent suggestion by SCF, btw...the parachute could be just the thing.

Considering the size of the room, you're going to need a TON of yardage. As a point of reference, I just bought some tulle for my daughter's veil, and it was about $3 a yard. You might get a similar effect by draping fabric just at the corners of the room.

To get the right length, measure from the center of the room to the corner, then down to the floor. Add about 10 - 20% extra length to accommodate the "drapey" effect...it won't hurt if it's puddled on the floor. Depending on what type of light fixture your reception room will have, you may be able to use an embroidery hoop to attach the fabric to a center point...you might want to paint this white. You'll need to speak with the facility employees to find out what holes you can add to their ceiling and walls, but in theory, a few cup hooks from the hardware store would hold a hoop with a light-weight fabric. You could also use the same type of hooks to hold the fabric together at the corners, by tying ribbons around the fabric, and then to the hooks.

If you really want to cover the whole thing, it's probably easiest if you add rod pockets just like curtains. You'll want to stitch all of the strips of fabric together first, so that you have a giant "sheet". Then, from 30 feet away from one edge, simply stitch two straight lines all the way across the sheet, at about an inch or an inch-and-a-half away from each other. Do the same thing to the other side. Slip in dowels from the hardware store, and hang the dowels from hooks as described above, but at the point where the ceiling and the walls meet.

The link below will allow you to browse and shop for fabric.

I dont think its very feasabile to do that in a affordable way...

If you were to go cheap i would use Muslin you can get it in bulk for about .50 per yard but you are looking at roughly 4,641 yards of fabric if you want to drape the whole ceiling.

I went to a reception where the ceiling was decorated with the clear Christmas lights. Tulle was draped over the lights. Very pretty effect, but don't ask me how they did it.

You could use a low cost alternative like Gossamer. You can purchase it through Shindigz. There is also a book "How to decorate with Gossamer" you can purchase from them for about $4. Check out the link below. Good Luck!

GO to the army surplus store any buy a used parachute. They are available in different sizes, should work to create the canopy, you can put lights behind it to create a diffused effect, good luck!
