Because they are.

Religion relies on emotional manipulation, including childhood indoctrination. A child has a built-in instinct to believe what parents tell them. This becomes ingrained so deep that most children can't shake the superstitions in adulthood. Religion also uses fear of Hell, empty promises of Heaven, pity for martyrs, guilt over not following impossible rules including thought control, and other techniques to enhance in-group bonding and out-group enmity. These are brainwashing techniques.

What they don't use much is logic and reason, mostly because they have no real evidence to back up what they claim.

I think that nonreligious people maybe want "Proof" of everything and if they can't see it they don't believe it exists. So it is real easy for them to look at hardcore Christians as "brainwashed".

Its not Christians. It is the over the top "Born Agains" who completely drop their life, preach against everyone, become judgemental and develop a "I am better than God" complex. They are brainwashed. If we are lucky, our loved ones sometimes come back. The fact that someone would live their life by a book of hearsay and stories blows my mind. They are truely brainwashed.

Rigid belief in things that are contradicted by real-world evidence.
Deliberate refusal to learn about any subject that runs contrary to their religious dogma.
Holding deliberate ignorance, provincialism, and xenophobia as virtues.
Regarding anything that contradicts their established doctrines as "prosecution of the just" or "evil".
In extreme cases, obeying the words of their religious leaders without question, or conflating the will of their leaders with the will of the "God".

Sound familiar? I see it frequently among the ranks of the Religious Right.

Look, strange women lying on their backs in ponds handing out swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses and not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

It's just a slur. Frankly,to talk to many atheists you can make a case they are brainwashed by the mass media since that seems to be their primary point of reference. Nothing is valid unless it is endorsed by the media. Nothing is true unless it is reported as such in the mass media. No issue is important unless the mass media say it is so. I know I'm generalizing, but my point is atheists are in no position to accuse anyone of being "brainwashed' - not the way they glom off the media.

it's an easy answer to people they don't agree with and love to mock and make fun of...instead of examining their own lack of scholarship and or knowledge in general, it's easier to say that....brainwashing is what most public re-education camps....errr schools do now...lies like evolution taught as fact...separation of church and state as fact when there is no such thing etc....can't expect much more from them really. but they know how to put condoms on cucumbers like pros! those public re-education camps are good for something!

Some (not all) Christians are only Christians because that's how they were raised. If they were exposed to say Islam or Hinduism when they were young, they'd be just as devoted to that religion.
