3.
a.The U.S. government for the first and last time was debt free while he was president.

c. He wouldn't back down from a fight, even when it ment being in over 100 duels. He had so many bullets in him that "he rattled like a bag of marbles."
d. He joined the American army in the Revolutionary War at 15 as a courier, captured by the British and attacked by an officer with a sword when Andrew refused to clean the officer's boots.
e. He was also a populist of sorts although the South accused him of being too pro North (high tariffs, known as the "Tariff of Abominations" forced the Southerns to pay more to farm) and the North was upset that he was to pro South (which led to the Indians being moved so the Southerners could get some gold for instance).

4.
a. Even though he was known as a Indian fighter and created the Indian reservation concept, he did adopt an Indian child and at least got the government to buy 32 million acres for $68 million for the land and give them new land.
b. In the Battle of New Orleans he lead 4,000 troops against 10,000 British. His army killed over 2,000 while losing 13 (with 58 wounded or missing).
c. As a general, he charged into Florida without congressional approval to defeat terrorism from Indians funded and trained (learned this from found writings) by the Spanish and the British. He "illegally" executed 2 British that were training the Indians.
d. He got rid of a corrupt banking system which he called "the brink of insurrection and treason."

george washington - was a great general who wrested the most prized colonies away from the most powerful nation at the time. he was offered the title of 'king' and declined it. when napoleon was on his deathbed his last words were:
"they wanted me to be another washington."

robert e. lee/ulysees s grant - great generals who were given the thankless task of killing their own brothers and being as brutal as needed about it - which they were.
what sets these two men apart is that lee put a stop to any talk of the armies of the south disbanding into the hills to cause violence for generations to come (ala northern ireland) and grant put a stop to any celebration that the union army wanted to engage in after the southern surrender - and made a point to get clothing, food and medical attention the the army of the south.

these were great men who knew instinctively what was best for their nation and the kind of men we never seem to be able to find to lead us anymore...
