I have relatives who profess to be Spiritualists/Buddist. They refer to themselves often as gods/goddesses and are really into this book called "The Secret". What are the basic beliefs of spiritualists?

That's interesting since Bhuddism is just a way of living your life, and not a religious thing.

Possibility One: They are using the old Holosync stuff, and found the book and movie, "The Secret". This is all about self-hypnosis and self-empowerment using the Holosync meditation inducing CDs. For those that want to feel all powerful, they call themselves "gods" and "goddesses".

Possibility Two: They are actually talking about the Karmic Secret, which is a detailed method describing how Karma moves about in one's life. To be a master of this would bring about many changes in one's life.

Spiritualists are different to what you describe

they sound more like spiritual Buddhists rather than Spiritualist Buddhists

Spiritualists believe in life after death proven through spirit communication
and a God energy

I do agree with Vinslave about the Buddhism side of this

There are alot of different ones, because no two are really the same. Best just to ask them. "The Secret" is a bunch of hogwash though, but that's just my opinion.

I usually don't disparage belief that are different from my own. In this case, I'll be honest. I knew people who were in to spiritualism. It was very fake and very corrupt.

It's a real good thing to ignore.

Sounds like they have just made up their own brand of religion.

Uh, no real Buddhist would assume such a lofty title as "god"/"goddess" for themselves... that's illogical.
