How to Fix an Air Conditioner That Is Blowing Hot Air Instructions Things You'll Need: * 12 hours and a new filter. Step 1 Go to the A/C until that is located inside the home. This is the large unit that distributes the air that comes in from the outside and then pushes it through the vents in each room. Step 2 Open up the closet, bring a flashlight and find the water pipes that are connected to it. They are usually small & copper. Feel them. Are they cold? Are the icy? Are they frozen? If yes, then move on to step 3. Step 3 Turn off the A/C. Pull out your A/C filter. Is it dirty? If yes, keep going. Step 4 Change filter. Then turn on the A/C "fan" switch from AUTO to ON. What has happened is the cold air that was being produced by the A/C until couldn't push the air through the vent because the filter was too dirty. Clogged. Thus creating a situation where the pipes that brought the cold water to the A/C got colder and colder until they froze. Step 5 Now you have to wait. The fan will help blow air through the system to warm up those pipes and slowly defrost them. This usually takes up to 12 hours. I highly suggest doing this overnight. When you can open your windows for cool air. By the morning your A/C should be working fine.

For the most part there isn't much you can do yourself to fix the A/C in vehicles anymore. You can buy a can to recharge the system but if it's not working it's best to have it looked at to see what's causing the problem so you don't wast money and have the freon leak back out. If you call around or look into a couple shops you should be able to find one that will look at it and tell you what's wrong for free and you can go from there. Usually the problem is low freon and maybe a leak in the system but as long as it's not too extensive it shouldn't cost too much.

Probably a coolant leak from the air condition system. Happened all the time to the BMW of my former boss.

You'll need to have the AC checked for leaks and refilled with coolant. Unfortunately, this can get quite expensive if there is indeed a leak. The AC components are often very hard to get to.

You've probably lost the coolant. Go to a repair shop and have them check for a leak and fix it. Don't just dump in more coolant, as it will leak out again. This can get expensive, and the coolant can be environmentally damaging as well. Plus, some AC units use the coolant to lubricate the pump. Running the AC without coolant can damage it, and make the repair that much more expensive.
